Job summary

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Search Platform team. This role drives indexing, retrieval, ranking, and serving infrastructure behind Claude across Claude.ai, API, and agentic surfaces.

You’ll partner with product, research, and infrastructure teams to shape the search experience and ensure high-quality results at scale. The position blends management with hands-on contributions, including design reviews and discussions on relevance and system reliability.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading engineering teams through rapid change.
• Direct experience building or operating search systems at scale.
• Hands-on when needed: review designs and discuss technical details with senior ICs.
• Product-minded with ability to make product calls in absence of a PM.
• Proven track record running high-scale, latency-sensitive production systems.
• Experience recruiting and closing senior engineers.
• Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the team of engineers building Anthropic's search platform: indexing, retrieval, ranking and serving.
• Own the strategy and roadmap for the platform and how Claude's search needs are met over time.
• Own search quality: evaluation methodology, relevance measurement, regression detection and the ranking improvements they drive.
• Operate the platform at scale, balancing product traffic against research and training demand while ensuring reliability, latency and cost.
• Wear the product hat when the work calls for it: prioritise search experience needs and sequence launches.
• Drive cross-team collaboration with product, research and infrastructure partners; articulate dependencies and risks.
• Be hands-on where it matters: design reviews, incident follow-ups and deep dives into relevance moves.
• Recruit, close and retain strong engineers in a competitive market.
