Job summary

Custom Manufacturing & Engineering, Inc. (CME) in New York is seeking an experienced Part-Time Engineering Manager to provide technical leadership and hands-on engineering support for aerospace and defense programs.

You will mentor engineers while guiding mechanical, electrical, and systems initiatives, coordinating with manufacturing, quality, program management, customers, and suppliers. This on-site role emphasizes design reviews and system verification in a fast-paced high-reliability

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering and broad aerospace/defense manufacturing exposure.
• Experience spanning mechanical, electrical and systems disciplines.
• Ability to lead engineers and translate requirements into design actions.
• Hands-on leadership in a small-company, on-site environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for CME engineering activities and personnel.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary efforts in mechanical, electrical and systems engineering.
• Review drawings, schematics, BOMs, test procedures and requirements.
• Support design, manufacture, integration and testing of cables, harnesses, and assemblies.
• Lead design reviews, engineering changes, and customer meetings.
• Ensure designs meet customer requirements and manufacturability goals.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality to resolve issues and drive corrective actions.
• Mentor engineers and provide practical technical direction.
• Interface with customers, suppliers, government reps, and primes as needed.

Job description

Custom Manufacturing & Engineering, Inc. (CME) is seeking an experienced Part-Time Engineering Manager to provide technical leadership and hands-on engineering support for our aerospace and defense manufacturing programs.

CME designs and manufactures cable and wire harness assemblies, electrical and electronic assemblies, test equipment, electromechanical systems, and sensor-based products for aerospace, defense, and other high-reliability applications.

We are looking for a multidisciplinary engineering professional with demonstrated experience in mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering who can mentor a new generation of engineers while leading technical activities while working directly with engineering, manufacturing, quality, program management, customers, and suppliers.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and oversight for CME engineering activities and personnel.
• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering efforts involving mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering.
• Review engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, bills of material, test procedures, and technical requirements.
• Support the design, development, manufacture, integration, and testing of cables and wire harnesses, electronic and electromechanical assemblies, test equipment, and surface mount technology (SMT).
• Conduct and participate in design reviews, technical reviews, engineering change reviews, and customer meetings.
• Ensure customer and system requirements are properly translated into designs, manufacturing documentation, and verification requirements.
• Work directly with Manufacturing and Quality to troubleshoot production issues, nonconformances, and technical problems.
• Support root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and engineering changes.
• Review designs for manufacturability, assembly, testability, reliability, and compliance with customer requirements.
• Provide technical oversight for product testing, verification, qualification, and acceptance.
• Support configuration management and engineering documentation control.
• Mentor engineers and technical personnel and provide practical technical direction.
• Interface with aerospace and defense customers, suppliers, government representatives, and prime contractors as required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Significant engineering experience in aerospace, defense, electronics, electromechanical, or other high-reliability manufacturing.
• Demonstrated experience across mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering disciplines.
• Experience leading or providing technical direction to engineers and technical personnel.
• Experience supporting products from requirements and design through manufacturing, integration, testing, and delivery.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, and technical requirements.
• Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a hands-on, small-company manufacturing environment.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following is preferred:

• Aerospace or defense cable and wire harness design/manufacturing
• Electrical and electronic manufacturing
• Test equipment or automated test equipment (ATE)
• Sensors, instrumentation, or control systems
• Electromechanical system design and integration
• Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, and Test (DFM/DFA/DFT)
• IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC J-STD-001, or IPC-A-610
• AS9100 or ISO 9001 environments
• MIL-STD, NASA, DoD, or aerospace/defense prime contractor requirements
• Root-cause analysis, corrective action, and MRB activities
• Government contracting or DoD programs
