Job summary

OpenAI in Seattle is seeking an engineering manager to lead a team of ~9–10 engineers and own execution across the Library product roadmap, shaping architecture while contributing hands-on when needed.

You will hire, mentor, and develop technical leaders, set high standards for code quality, reliability, and security, and partner with product, design, research, and infrastructure teams to deliver cohesive AI-powered experiences at scale.

Qualifications

• Experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams while remaining technically hands-on.
• Strong software engineering foundation with ability to contribute production code in a modern codebase.
• Built and shipped user-facing products with a high quality bar in fast-moving environments.
• Founder/startup or early-stage product experience is valuable for operating with ambiguity.
• Ability to reason about distributed systems, data persistence, retrieval, permissions, collaboration, and AI-native architectures.
• Excellent communication across engineering, product, design, research, and exec stakeholders.
• Balance long-term technical direction with near-term delivery, and know when to prototype or simplify.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of ~9–10 engineers with clear accountability and rhythm.
• Own the engineering roadmap for Library, prioritizing high-impact problems with product and design partners.
• Set a high bar for product quality, technical excellence, reliability, privacy, and user trust.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership through architecture reviews, prototyping, debugging, and coding when accelerating delivery.
• Build systems that persist, retrieve, and use personal and organizational context for AI products.
• Collaborate across Personalization, model, research, infrastructure, enterprise, and integration teams to deliver cohesive experiences.
• Navigate ambiguity, make pragmatic tradeoffs, and translate AI capabilities into a concrete product/engineering plan.
• Hire exceptional engineers and develop technical leaders to scale impact.
