Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an engineering manager to lead a ~9–10 person team within the ChatGPT Library group. You will translate an ambitious product vision into a focused roadmap and ship reliable AI‑driven experiences that preserve and utilize user and organizational context.

You will alternate between people leadership, product decisions, technical design, and coding when needed, with founder or early‑stage startup experience seen as a plus. This role emphasizes speed, judgment, and scale.

Qualifications

• Hands-on engineering manager with the ability to lead a ~9–10 engineers team.
• Translate ambitious product vision into a focused roadmap and ship reliable experiences.
• Review architecture, prototype, debug, and code where needed to unblock work.
• Balance people leadership with product decisions and technical design.
• Experience with founder or early‑stage startup scenarios is highly valuable.
• Strong ability to reason about distributed systems, persistence, and AI‑native architectures.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of ~9–10 engineers, establishing clarity and execution rhythm.
• Own the engineering roadmap for Library, prioritizing high‑impact problems with partners.
• Set a high bar for product quality, technical excellence, reliability, privacy, and user trust.
• Provide hands‑on technical leadership through architecture reviews, prototyping, debugging, and coding when needed.
• Build systems that persist, retrieve, and use personal and organizational context.
• Partner across teams to deliver cohesive end‑to‑end experiences.
• Navigate ambiguity and turn emerging AI capabilities into a clear plan.
• Hire exceptional engineers and develop technical leaders to scale the team.
