Job summary

Slack is seeking an Engineering Manager on the Core Services team to keep Slack reliable and lightning-fast at massive scale. You will own the technical direction for Edge Caches, Realtime Services, and IDR, guiding migrations and ensuring high availability for millions of users.

You’ll lead a Loom migration, collaborate with Product, Security, and AWS, and build a high-performing team across time zones. This role emphasizes reliability, cost control, and architectural excellence.

Qualifications

• Led engineering teams for 5+ years building and operating high-scale backend infrastructure or distributed systems.
• Experience with realtime messaging systems or event-driven architectures at scale.
• History of managing Tier 0 / Tier 1 services with on-call rotations and incident response.
• Ability to partner with cross-functional stakeholders to turn business requirements into engineering plans.

Responsibilities

• Owning the technical direction and roadmap across the Core Services portfolio: Edge Caches, Realtime Services, Enterprise Key Management, International Data Residency, and Image Proxying and Uploads.
• Leading a multi-system migration of Flannel to Loom, ensuring current systems remain reliable for millions of users.
• Driving delivery and execution while maintaining reliability as a top priority, including sprint planning and incident follow-ups.
• Owning on-call operations and incident management for Tier 0 services across multiple teams.
• Partnering cross-functionally with Product, Sales, Compliance, Security, AWS, and other infrastructure teams on dependencies and risks.
• Representing the team in leadership reviews and planning, building business-and-technical cases for investments.
• Building and maintaining a high-trust team culture, hiring, and mentoring engineers across time zones.
• Managing cost and capacity for services at massive scale, including AWS spend and Loom migration savings.
• Advancing AI development tooling adoption while preserving engineering rigor.
