Position Overview

Engineering Manager,.NET Application Architecture at Hagerty, the world’s largest insurer of collectible and enthusiast vehicles. The role leads a team of architects and developers, mentoring on design patterns, maintaining shared libraries, and ensuring technical excellence across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Guide staff on long‑term company goals, develop quarterly plans, and communicate the vision, strategy, and roadmap.
  • Lead feasibility assessments for new features, estimating cost and timelines within current priorities.
  • Refine the year‑over‑year roadmap for shared frameworks and libraries, ensuring intentional evolution.
  • Ensure shared libraries, frameworks, and standards meet data protection and privacy requirements.
  • Educate architects on standards, best practices, and code quality—covering auditability, deployment, documentation, evolvability, maintainability, performance monitoring, operational readiness, testing regimes, security evaluation, and risk mitigation.
  • Coach architects on knowledge sharing, cross‑team communication, and evaluating trade‑offs such as feature richness versus supportability.
  • Measure and improve developer experience by assessing documentation, tooling integration, and friction points.
  • Build a healthy, dynamic team: recruit diverse talent, provide timely feedback, manage workload, and track team health metrics.
  • Develop onboarding and career progression curricula, including mentorship and deliberate practice.
  • Facilitate collaboration with product, solution architecture, and infrastructure teams, ensuring clear status communication and alignment with organizational direction.
  • Monitor operational and financial sustainability of .NET development, interpreting key metrics like metered resource consumption and infrastructure utilization.
  • Support budget planning by articulating team needs, justifying changes in team size, and communicating architectural decisions’ impact on costs and developer experience.
  • Remain current on technologies such as C#, Terraform, Typescript, HTTP API patterns, SAML/OAuth, load testing, diagnostics, deployment (VMs, containers, cloud), and networking.
Qualifications
  • At least three years as a senior engineer, team lead, architect, or manager on large‑scale, complex systems, with at least one consecutive year of product support and minor feature enhancements.
  • Strong technical and interpersonal skills, including effective communication to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Decision‑making ability with data‑driven trade‑off analysis and bias mitigation.
  • Coaching experience across varying competency levels and communication styles.
  • Proficiency in C#, Terraform, Typescript, HTTP APIs (REST, RPC, GraphQL), SAML/OAuth/OIDC, security practices, load testing, application profiling, monitoring, alerting, deployment (VMs, containers, cloud), networking (TCP/IP, HTTP, firewalls, load balancers).
  • Experience with public‑company compliance, including Sarbanes‑Oxley and internal controls, if applicable.
Additional Information

Open to U.S. remote work. Remote candidates may work from home; those within 20 miles of Traverse City, Michigan, will follow a hybrid schedule (office three days per week). Quarterly travel to events may be required.
