Job summary

SoftWriters in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a Manager of Software Engineering to lead and scale our engineering teams in a hybrid office setting. You will guide delivery, architecture, and modernization of our healthcare software portfolio while driving an agent‑first, AI‑enabled SDLC.

You’ll partner with Directors and Scrum Masters to coach engineers, improve quality, and deliver value each Sprint, with emphasis on collaboration, mentorship, and strategic tech adoption.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
• 2+ years hands-on technical leadership and people leadership experience.
• Experience building and leading a diverse engineering team.
• Experience working with Scrum teams and self-organized teams.
• Advanced software design and development knowledge.
• Strong CS fundamentals: data structures and algorithms.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to own escalated incidents until resolution.
• Experience leading tooling/technology changes and supporting people.
• Experience with SOLID, IOC/DI, ORM, and unit testing.
• Experience designing relational databases (SQL/Oracle/MySQL).
• Experience with source control systems (Git, TFS, SVN).
• Strong customer service orientation.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple innovative technology projects and the teams that deliver them.
• Hire and scale engineering teams.
• Collaborate with other teams to align projects with objectives.
• Provide recommendations on trends, design requirements and AI-assisted development.
• Mentor team members to deliver clear, tested code.
• Support and guide Scrum practices for a great team experience.
• Facilitate collaboration to deliver value each Sprint.
• Deliver business value within forecasts.
• Partner with Scrum Masters and Product Owners on performance and development.
• Improve quality across product development.
• Lead evolution to agent-first SDLC and use AI tooling.
• Coach engineers toward adoption of new tools and practices.
• Identify adoption friction and address it direct and supportive.
• Support leadership in growing the team and capabilities.
