Engineering Manager – AGV & Automation Systems

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the design and execution of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV), mobile robotics, and industrial automation systems.
This individual will provide technical and organizational leadership to Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers, overseeing projects from initial concept and design through manufacturing, integration, testing, and commissioning.
This is primarily a leadership role rather than a hands-on design position. However, the Engineering Manager must have enough technical depth across mechanical design, electrical systems, controls, and automation to effectively guide engineering teams, challenge technical decisions, allocate resources, and ensure successful project execution.
The ideal candidate will come from an AGV/AMR, robotics, material handling, custom machine building, or industrial automation environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers.
- Provide engineering leadership for the design and development of AGVs, AMRs, mobile robotics, and related automation systems.
- Oversee engineering projects from concept and design through fabrication, assembly, integration, testing, installation, and commissioning.
- Manage engineering resources, project priorities, workloads, schedules, and technical deliverables across multiple projects.
- Ensure mechanical, electrical, and controls designs successfully integrate into complete automated systems.
- Partner closely with Project Management to maintain project schedules, budgets, technical requirements, and customer expectations.
- Conduct and participate in engineering design reviews and technical problem-solving efforts.
- Provide technical guidance on controls architecture, electrical design, mechanical systems, machine design, and automated equipment.
- Establish and improve engineering standards, processes, documentation, and design practices.
- Drive continuous improvement throughout the engineering organization.
- Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Operations, Supply Chain, Project Management, Sales, and field service teams.
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of complex technical issues during equipment integration and commissioning.Participate in customer-facing technical discussions and ensure engineered solutions meet application requirements.
- Develop engineering talent through coaching, performance management, succession planning, and technical development.
- Promote a culture centered around safety, accountability, technical excellence, collaboration, and on-time project execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
- 8+ years of engineering experience within industrial automation, machine building, robotics, material handling, or a related engineered-equipment environment.
- Previous experience managing or leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience overseeing Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineering functions.
- Strong understanding of automated equipment and complex electromechanical systems.
- Experience managing engineering activities across multiple customer projects simultaneously.
- Strong project management, resource planning, and organizational capabilities.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.

The Engineering Manager does not need to be the primary designer or programmer but should possess a strong working knowledge of:
- PLC-controlled automation
- Industrial controls and control architecture

- Motors, drives, servos, and motion control
- Sensors and industrial instrumentation
- Robotics and automated equipment
- CAD and engineering design processes
- Machine safety and risk assessment
- Equipment integration and commissioning

What We're Looking For
The strongest candidate will combine people leadership with broad technical knowledge. We are particularly interested in engineering leaders who have progressed from a Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, or Mechatronics Engineering background into management and now oversee multiple engineering disciplines.
Direct AGV experience is highly valued; however, candidates with leadership experience in AMRs, robotics, custom automation, warehouse automation, material handling systems, or complex machine building will also be considered.
