Role & Responsibilities

We are seeking an Engineering Manager for a nuclear instrumentation manufacturer to lead a team of about mechanical, electrical, ceramic, and nuclear engineers. The team designs, builds, and qualifies radiation sensors, ionization chambers, fission counters, and radiation‑resistant cables. These products are qualified as Class 1E safety‑related equipment (IEEE 323 and 344) for reactors worldwide, as well as for defense and scientific applications.

This is a people‑leadership role. You'll partner with the Principal Engineer and senior engineers, who hold deep technical ownership of designs and qualification programmes. Success means on‑time delivery, a healthy and growing team, and strong partnerships across Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, Program Management, and Sales.

  • Manage and develop ~12 engineers, including one‑on‑ones, performance reviews, coaching, promotions, and addressing performance issues with HR.
  • Set priorities, sequence work, and balance workload across concurrent projects.
  • Own engineering schedule commitments, report progress to Program Management, and drive recovery plans when deliverables are at risk.
  • Represent engineering in cross‑functional forums and customer interactions, including surveillances, source inspections, and proposal support.
  • Own the group's financial performance: annual planning, forecasting, cost‑centre spending, and CAPEX requests.
  • Build training plans and career paths, and support recruiting and onboarding.
  • Champion Nuclear Safety Culture, personnel safety, and human performance fundamentals.
Essential Qualifications
  • B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Mechanical, Electrical, Ceramic, or Nuclear preferred). M.S., M.Eng., or MBA a plus.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years directly managing an engineering team (5+ engineers preferred), with hire/fire and performance management authority.
  • Strong prioritisation, coaching, talent development, and cross‑functional negotiation skills.
  • Working understanding of extreme‑environment engineering and formal qualification testing.
  • Financial acumen, including forecasting and CAPEX justification.
  • Strong written, oral, and executive communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project‑tracking tools.
Bonus Qualifications
  • Familiarity with IEEE 323/344 or comparable qualification frameworks (aerospace, defence, medical device).
  • Knowledge of 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR Part 21, and ASME NQA‑1.
  • Experience in commercial nuclear, naval reactors, national labs, aerospace, defence, or scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience in low‑volume, highly regulated, project‑based manufacturing.
  • PMP/CAPM and Lean/Six Sigma certification.
  • Experience leading engineering recruiting efforts.
