About Company

Condé Nast reaches more than 550 million people every month through iconic brands such as Vogue, Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, and Architectural Digest. We are in the middle of a major transformation, modernizing our platforms, expanding our digital capabilities, and rethinking how content is created and delivered at a global scale. This role sits at the heart of how our content is created, managed, and distributed worldwide.

About The Team

The Platform Engineering group builds the foundation behind Condé Nast’s digital products. Our systems support content planning, creation, delivery, and experimentation across brands and markets. We care deeply about reliability, performance, and developer experience, and we work closely with product, design, and data partners across the US, Europe, and India.

About The Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team in the content creation domain, specifically focused on building and evolving our in house CMS, Copilot. You will manage a team of approximately 8 to 10 engineers and help them design, build, and operate services that are critical to how Condé Nast creates, manages, and distributes content.

This role is well suited for a technically strong manager who enjoys staying close to the work when it matters, can adapt to changing priorities, and is comfortable owning initiatives end to end, from early ideation through delivery and long term operation.

While this is not a primarily hands on coding role, there will be times when writing or modifying code is expected, particularly to unblock the team, prototype solutions, address critical issues, or contribute to complex technical efforts. You should be comfortable working directly in the codebase when needed, while spending the majority of your time on technical leadership, team health, and delivery.

The ideal candidate has deep backend experience, a strong understanding of distributed systems, and enough front end knowledge to effectively partner with client side engineers and product teams.

What You’ll Do
Engineering and Architecture
  • Guide the architecture, design, and development of scalable backend services, APIs, and applications that power Copilot and the content creation ecosystem
  • Participate in technical design and code reviews, setting and maintaining a high bar for quality, reliability, and maintainability
  • Partner with product and design to translate business requirements into robust, extensible systems
  • Help evolve our infrastructure and platform capabilities using AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Docker
  • Partner with engineers to identify and execute on cost optimization opportunities across cloud infrastructure, data storage, and service architecture, using metrics and usage patterns to guide decisions
  • Drive thoughtful and responsible use of AI to address challenges in content creation, and its workflows
Team Leadership
  • Manage and support a team of 8+ engineers
  • Coach engineers on technical growth, system design, and career development, providing clear and actionable feedback
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement
  • Improve team processes to increase efficiency, quality, and time to market
  • Partner closely with Product Managers and business stakeholders to ensure solutions meet real user and business needs
About You
  • 10+ years of experience building and operating production software systems
  • 2+ years of people management experience leading teams of at least 4 engineers
  • Strong backend engineering background with experience designing and operating distributed systems
  • Solid understanding of cloud architecture, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized environments, particularly AWS, Terraform, and Kubernetes
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, with the ability to read and reason about code across services
  • Experience designing and working with REST and GraphQL APIs
  • Strong database experience with systems such as MongoDB and Postgres
  • Comfortable owning projects across the full development lifecycle, from ideation to long term support and operation
  • Clear and effective communicator who works well in cross functional and distributed teams
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate across time zones
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent practical experience
Nice to Have
  • Experience with MongoDB and OpenSearch in production environments
  • Experience with JavaScript and related frameworks such as Node.js, Express, Hapi, or React
  • Familiarity with front end fundamentals including HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript
  • Prior experience working on CMS, publishing, or content platforms
Our Tech Stack
  • Languages and Frameworks: JavaScript, Node.js, Python
  • Data: MongoDB, Postgres, OpenSearch, Redis, ValKey, Kafka
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions
  • APIs: REST, GraphQL, Apollo Federation, AWS AppSync
  • Observability: Datadog, Splunk, OpenTelemetry
  • Version Control: Git, GitHub
How We Work
  • Strong emphasis on pairing, knowledge sharing, and continuous upskilling
  • Collaboration across regions and time zones
  • Infrastructure as Code by default
  • Teams own and operate the services they build, including on call responsibilities
Why Work With Us
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • A collaborative, curious, and supportive engineering culture
  • Modern tools and hardware to help you do your best work
  • A well established product development organization
  • An opportunity to help shape the future of digital publishing at a global scale
