Job summary

Roblox is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager for Communications in San Mateo to lead the in-game text chat platform, guiding a team of engineers delivering real-time messaging at billions of messages daily. Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams.
• Real-time messaging or consumer-facing products at scale is preferred.
• Strong product intuition balancing user experience and technical tradeoffs.
• Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems with high reliability and low latency.
• Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain engineers and build high-performing teams.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership, aligning product, design, and engineering.
• Bias toward action and comfort with ambiguity at high scale.

Responsibilities

• Lead, grow, and develop a team of engineers responsible for in-game text chat, ensuring high engineering excellence and career growth.
• Own the technical vision and multi-quarter roadmap for real-time messaging, balancing features with scale and cost.
• Drive architecture and evolution of messaging systems to deliver billions of messages per day with low latency.
• Partner with product and design to treat chat as a product and translate goals into shipped features.
• Collaborate with Trust & Safety, Policy, and ML teams to ensure safe and civil experiences for a global youth audience.
• Establish strong engineering practices around quality, observability, on-call health, and operational excellence for always-available systems.
• Communicate clearly and influence across the organization to align teams behind a shared direction.
