Job summary

PLP in Ohio is seeking an Engineering Co-Op to support the Quality department by performing inspections, measurements, and documentation. The role offers hands-on experience with calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, CMMs, and ISO 9001:2015 processes, with activities scaled to your student level.

Junior- or senior-level responsibilities include writing CMM/optical programs, designing gauges, and contributing to process improvements while partnering with the Plant Quality team.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required, and at least one year toward a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Sophomore level responsibilities; no prior experience required.
  • Ability to take accurate measurements with basic tools.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and computer software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; team-oriented.
  • Ability to document measurement results and reports clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections and testing on purchased and manufactured parts using basic measuring equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering prints to determine measurements and tolerances.
  • Conduct QA defect sorting on inventory per engineering standards.
  • Utilize optical comparator and CMM to carry out quality inspections.
  • Assist in ISO 9001:2015 documentation and procedures.
  • Create job books and inspection points using Microsoft Office and image editing software.
  • Assist in implementing EPOI and electronic points of inspection.

Job description

The Engineering Co-Op supports the Quality department by conducting laboratory tests, assisting with product development, and contributing to quality inspection and process improvement initiatives. The role provides valuable hands‑on experience in measurement, testing, documentation, and engineering support activities, with responsibilities tailored to the student's level of experience.

Essential Functions: Sophomore Level
  • Perform inspections and testing on purchased and manufactured parts and components utilizing basic measuring equipment (caliper, micrometer, tape measure, height gauge, etc.)
  • Read and interpret engineering prints to ascertain critical measurements and tolerances.
  • Conduct QA defect sorting operations on inventory which may be non-conforming per engineering standards.
  • Utilize electronic measurement equipment such as optical comparator and Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) to carry out Quality Inspections
  • Assists in the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015. Reviews controlled documentation defining production and quality procedures for accuracy and completeness. Maintains release of controlled copies of ISO procedures. Works with Corporate Quality department and Plant Quality Manager to release revised procedures.
  • Creates “Job Books”, defining production operator work instructions, bill of materials, and Quality Alerts, utilizing Microsoft office and image editing software.
  • Creates “Points of Inspection” documentation, defining measurement parameters, gauges to be used, and inspection frequency.
Essential Functions: Junior/Senior Level
  • Writes optical comparator and CMM programs for production and purchased parts to improve inspection speed and QA inspection throughput.
  • Evaluates existing measurement and inspection procedures and identifies opportunities for efficiency improvements, the need for measurement fixtures, NO/GO Gauges.
  • Designs, tests, and implements custom quality gauges and fixtures to improve measurement and inspection efficiency utilizing 3D modeling software (CREO Parametric).
  • Fabricates quality gauges and fixtures utilizing commodity components, fasteners, materials. Utilizes basic shop equipment such as drill press, band saw, grinder.
  • Identifies outside suppliers to manufacture quality gauges and fixtures. Requests quotation, defines scope of work and use case to supplier. Works with purchasing to request approval and provide purchase order to suppliers.
  • Identifies quality department process improvement opportunities and implements procedures and work instructions.
  • Assists in the implementation of Electronic Points of Inspection (EPOI). Converts paper “point of inspection” documents to electronic documents utilizing Microsoft Excell, Visual Basic, and SharePoint platforms.
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Assist with inventory management of inspection tools and equipment.
  • Support other departments as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma required and a minimum of one year completed toward bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Required Experience: None required for Sophomore level responsibilities. Responsibilities/experience will build during Co-Op relationship in Junior and Senior years.
  • Other Qualifications/Requirements or Skills:
  • Ability to take accurate measurements.
  • Proficiency in using basic measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauge, gauge pins.
  • Computer literate, including working knowledge of Spreadsheets and computer software.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to document measurement results, reports, etc., in an organized fashion.
  • A team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
