Job summary

City of San Antonio is seeking an entry-level engineer to perform preparatory design work for public works projects. Work is primarily in an office setting with supervision and possible staff oversight. The assignment is located at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Services Center in San Antonio, TX, with standard government hours.

Requirements include a bachelor's degree in engineering and a valid Texas driver’s license. Experience with CAD is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects construction in progress for conformance and adjusts as necessary.
  • Coordinates with divisions, departments, or agencies on projects under design.
  • Meets with consultants to discuss designs and problems.
  • Prepares cost estimates and monitors budgets on projects.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding projects.
  • Provides technical assistance to other divisions and departments.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing engineering work and executing varied preparatory work for an engineering work program in a major City department. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs the necessary preliminary work for the design and construction of public works projects.
  • Directs subordinate personnel in the performance of all preparatory work (depending on area of assignment).
  • Revises project plans and specifications and legal requirements.
  • Inspects construction in progress for conformance with plans and specifications and makes adjustments when necessary.
  • Coordinates with other divisions, departments, or municipal agencies on projects under design.
  • Meets with consultants on various projects to discuss designs and design problems.
  • Prepares cost estimates and monitors budgets on assigned projects.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding assigned projects.
  • Provides technical assistance to other divisions and departments.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college, university, or engineering school approved by a State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and no experience.
  • No substitution for education allowed.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with computer aided drafting.
  • Knowledge of street construction and or/ transportation project engineering practices, methods, and procedures.
Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.

  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing rudimentary software.
  • Ability to learn Federal and State regulations and City ordinances related to the area assigned.
  • Ability to determine types of field data needed as basis for satisfactory design and develop complete construction plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to interpret and properly apply all applicable regulations.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations
