This is an Engineering Assistant position for Smithfield Construction Office. Performs technical duties and fieldwork related to the inspection, maintenance, and operation of state-maintained roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure. Work involves assisting higher-level technicians, engineers, and supervisors in a variety of highway maintenance and construction activities. Performs basic technical inspection work and basic surveying to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and standards for highway and bridge construction projects administered by the NCDOT. Work involves on-site inspection, documentation, material testing, and quantity measurements of construction activities to ensure workmanship, materials, and methods comply with state and federal requirements. Ability to read, interpret and explain such things as construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures. Ability to take notes. Ability to learn computer software such as GIS, Outlook, and Excel. Good communicative skills and attention to detail needed. The employee must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, at heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures, uneven terrain, and during nights and weekends if necessary.
