University of Iowa is seeking an Academic Advisor and Recruitment Specialist in Iowa City to provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate engineering students, with a focus on a first-year population and transition support.

The role includes recruitment activities, program coordination, and delivering information sessions to promote enrollment in the College of Engineering. Hybrid work within Iowa is available, with duties across campus and partner schools.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and listening skills: strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment.
  • Ability to be self-directed, organized, and proactive in completing work assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary academic advisor for a selected population of students.
  • Advise students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions, advising activities, referrals, outreach efforts, and other relevant information within university systems.
  • Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career.
  • Introduce students to opportunities that will enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
  • Teach students how to manage the college experience, navigate the University, make informed decisions, and assume responsibility for their academic success.
  • Represent the University of Iowa College of Engineering to targeted constituencies. Speak to groups and individual students; communicate with staff, faculty, and administrators at high schools and community colleges to promote the College of Engineering and recruit new Engineering students.
  • Deliver presentations and information sessions for prospective students and their guests to promote enrollment in the College of Engineering.
  • Participate in recruitment, hiring, training, and professional development of the Student Ambassador staff.
  • Serve as the Engineering Campus Partner for the People in Engineering (PIE) Living and Learning Community.
