Job summary

Qualifications

The Engineer Supervisor oversees Engineering & Facilities operations during weekends and peak visitor hours across all MFAH campuses. This role provides hands‑on technical support, supervises engineering and BSA staff, ensures timely completion of work orders and event setups, and maintains safe, reliable operation of mechanical, electrical, and building systems. The position also assumes essential employee responsibilities related to safety coordination, hazard mitigation, and emergency response.

  • Supervises stationary engineers and Building Services Assistants.
  • Provides daily direction, assigns work, and ensures timely, high-quality completion of tasks.
  • Serves as the weekend operational lead and point of contact for decision‑making.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and supports staff development and training.
  • Serves as Engineering & Facilities point of contact for fire alarm, fire suppression, and elevator systems during assigned shifts.
  • Coordinates inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair activities for fire alarm, sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, clean agent, and emergency lighting systems.
  • Acts as primary liaison for elevator maintenance vendors and inspectors; oversees routine service, callbacks, shutdowns, and annual state inspections for engineering and facilities

Facilities Operations

  • Performs mechanical, engineering, and maintenance work at all museum properties.
  • Manages and completes Facilities Work Orders (FWOs) for repairs, maintenance, event setups, and internal service requests, ensuring work is documented and closed out in a timely manner. Follows up with requestors as needed and enters clear, concise work summaries in the FWO system.
  • Oversees operations in the central utility plant, control room, and electrical rooms.
  • Coordinates maintenance and readiness of museum vehicles, lifts, and specialized equipment.
  • Leads event support, including sets, break, and troubleshooting building systems, working directly with event planners to resolve issues.
  • Supervises grounds and water-feature maintenance, including fountains, pools, and irrigation components.
  • Oversees contractor work performed at the museum during weekends.

Safety & Compliance

  • Conducts and documents safety incidents and required PPE compliance checks.
  • Coordinates with the Environmental Health and Safety Manager and Chief Engineers on emergency response protocols and safety standards.
  • As an essential employee, protects museum properties and assets during natural disasters and emergency situations.

Equipment & Systems

  • Performs water treatment of mechanical equipment, cooling towers, and water features.
  • Operates aerial lifts (20–85 ft), forklifts, and other powered equipment as needed.
  • Drives museum vehicles such as cargo vans, box trucks, and pickup trucks.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots BAS platforms; Metasys experience preferred.
  • Ensures mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems operate safely and efficiently.

Other Duties

  • Provides weekend shift coverage for stationary engineers when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support museum operations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of HVAC, boilers, chillers, AHUs, electrical, plumbing, and auxiliary systems.
  • Ability to read building plans, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage conflict, and make sound operational decisions.
  • Physically able to perform duties including lifting, bending, and equipment operation.
  • Ability to work on‑call or respond to emergent weekend needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound judgment.
  • Proficiency using computers, email, digital work order systems, and basic software applications.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.

Education & Experience

  • City of Houston 2nd Grade Stationary Engineer License Preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous supervisory or lead technician experience preferred.
  • Minimum two years of experience in a similar facility or operational role.
  • Experience in a campus, museum, hospital, or multi‑building environment preferred.
  • Experience with Metasys or other BAS platforms is a plus.
