Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. in Pascagoula, MS is seeking a senior engineer who researches, designs and develops propulsion-related mechanical systems for complex naval projects.

This role requires a US citizen, 1st shift, and 10–25% travel, with no telework eligibility. Ideal candidates hold ABET-accredited engineering degrees and substantial experience in Main Propulsion Systems, including gear and engine analysis.

  • Subject Matter Expert in Main Propulsion Systems and related analysis and design.
  • Ability to present information verbally and in writing to internal and external customers.
  • Experience providing shipboard troubleshooting during construction and trials of propulsion oriented problems.

The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines.Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical systems such as thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives. Assignments are often self-initiated. Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. Work checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of superior.Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve critical organizational objectives and affect the image of the organization technological capability.Serves as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs. Acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.

Must Have

Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university and 14 years of experience

Nice to Have

Subject Matter Expert in Main Propulsion Systems, and auxiliary system analysis and design, specifically Main Reduction Gears, Propulsion Engines and support systems. Ability to apply standard engineering practices, scientific principles and techniques to specific situations and recognize discrepancies. Ability to interact and present information verbally and in writing to internal and external customers. Ability to provide shipboard troubleshooting during construction and trials of more complex propulsion oriented problems.

Expert knowledge of LHA/LHD, LPD, DDG and NSC/FFG(X) Ship Specifications and performance requirements. Experience submitting RCIA's to the Navy for resolution of contractual issues. Experience in presenting technical support information to the customer in meetings and design review sessions. Submit hardware and software CDRLs to the Navy for approval. Support program office in the planning and evalution of Propulsion Systems from PO award to the supplier up through delivery of the ship. Provide technical guidance and direction to engineers across disciplines responsible for interfacing systems. Provide professional technical mentoring for junior engineers.
