Nebraska Public Power District is seeking an electrical engineering student for the Engineer Intern - System Protection Summer 2027 position at Columbus General Office, Columbus, Nebraska. The internship runs May through August 2027 and requires the student to be finishing their sophomore year.

The role reports to the Engineering Supervisor - System Protections. It offers a dynamic learning environment in a utility setting and an opportunity to contribute to protection schemes and system

Qualifications

• Electrical engineering student pursuing a degree from an accredited college/university.
• Must be finishing sophomore year of college.
• Summer session May–August 2027.

Responsibilities

• Assist with specifying protection schemes and relay recommendations.
• Perform calculations to support relay settings and ground rise.
• Develop trip-checking procedures and fault analysis.
• Support substations automation, PLC programming, and HMI development.

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Engineer Intern - System Protection Summer 2027 located at Columbus General Officein Columbus, Nebraska. Position closes November 13 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

This position will report to the Engineering Supervisor - System Protections.

Position Summary

Nebraska Public Power District is looking for an electrical engineering student to work with and assist other experienced engineering staff in the System Protection Engineering Department. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2027 summer session (May through August 2027).

The work location is Columbus, Nebraska. At a minimum, the student must be finishing their sophomore year of college.

NOTE: Intern position is available to undergraduate students only.

Education, Training and Experience

The student must be pursuing an electrical engineering degree from an accredited college/university. At a minimum, the student must be finishing their sophomore year of college. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2027 summer session (May through August 2027).

Licenses and/or Certifications

NA

Protection duties may include assisting with specifying appropriate protection schemes, making relay recommendations, performing calculations to support relay settings, developing trip-checking procedures, calculating ground potential rise, calculating available fault current, locating faults, analyzing system disturbances, and operational support.

Controls and Automation duties may include assisting with automated substations, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming, Human Machine Interface (HMI) development and programming, intra-substation communication and networking, control panels, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, equipment procurement, startup, and operations support.

Accountable for other duties as assigned.

Salary Information

Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth.In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Engineering Intern - Junior - $27.61/hour

Engineering Intern - Senior - 29.58/hour

Interns eligible for $1000.00 housing stipend.

Travel Required

Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
