Job summary

Nebraska Public Power District in Columbus, Nebraska is seeking an Engineering Intern - Substations for Summer 2027. The internship supports the Distribution Lines Department on substation design and related engineering tasks under the guidance of the Engineering Supervisor - Substations.

The position targets undergraduate civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering students (sophomore year or higher) and runs May through August 2027.

Qualifications

• Pursuing civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering degree.
• Must be finishing sophomore year of college.
• Intern position available to undergraduate students only.

Responsibilities

• Assist with substation configurations and equipment selection (Autotransformers, Power Transformers, PCB, MODs, Capacitor Banks, Wave Traps, Switchgear, Buswork).
• Assist with designing foundations, ground grids, and conduit plans.
• Create site grading plans and perform structural support analysis for various elements.
• Accountable for other duties as assigned.

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Engineering Intern - Substations Summer 2027 located at Columbus General Office in Columbus, Nebraska. Position closes November 13 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

This position will report to the Engineering Supervisor - Substations.

Position Summary

Nebraska Public Power District is looking for an civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering student to work with and assist other experienced engineering staff in the Distribution Lines Department. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2027 summer session (May through August 2027).

The work location is Columbus, NE.

NOTE: Intern position is available to undergraduate students only.

Education, Training and Experience

The student must be pursuing an civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering degree from an accredited college/university. At a minimum, the student must be finishing their sophomore year of college. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2027 summer session (May through August 2027).

Substation duties may include assisting with designing substation configurations along with various types of equipment used in substations (Autotransformers, Power Transformers, PCBs, MODs, Capacitor Banks, Wave Traps, Switchgear, and Buswork), designing foundations, ground grids, and conduit plans, creating site grading plans, and performing structural support analysis for various types of elements.

Salary Information

Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth.In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Engineering Intern - Junior - $27.61/hour

Engineering Intern - Senior - 29.58/hour

Interns eligible for $1000.00 housing stipend.

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre‑tax or Roth contributions.
