Job summary

Matrix New World Engineering, a part of True Environmental, seeks an Engineer Diver to support Marine and Coastal engineering in Florham Park and NYC. You’ll perform waterfront inspections, collect data, and contribute to rehabilitation and construction design documents in a team environment.

The role requires 0–5 years of inspection/design experience, ADCI-certified diving credentials, and a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals, safety, and communication.

Qualifications

• Willing to travel and work outdoors; strong quantitative/analytical skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Teams/Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Perform waterfront inspections of marine/coastal infrastructure (piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls).
• Collect field data, document conditions with measurements and sketches; use point clouds as needed.
• Develop detailed inspection reports tailored to client requirements; leverage new tech.
• Support rehabilitation and new construction design documents.
• Assist with dive operations, safety planning, and equipment maintenance.
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, and regulators in the field.

We are currently seeking an Engineer Diver for our growing Marine and Coastal engineering practice in our Florham Park and NYC offices. The successful candidate will support the growth of our Marine Asset Management service line by supporting field inspections, developing inspection reports, generating rehabilitation construction documents, and providing waterfront construction oversight in the NYC metropolitan area. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who has between 0 and 5 years of inspection and design experience. Successful candidates enjoy working in a team environment through challenging projects. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are critical.

What You'll Do

• Perform waterfront (above and underwater) inspections of marine and coastal infrastructure; including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, and revetments
• Collect field data as required to document and communicate existing conditions using measurements, sketches, destructive and non-destructive testing equipment, point cloud models, and emerging technologies
• Develop detailed inspection reports to communicate the results of field investigation efforts, tailored to the individual requirements of the client. A focus on leveraging emerging technologies to identify opportunities to maximize efficiencies.
• Support the development of rehabilitation and new construction design documents.
• Support the development of design calculations as required to support inspection and rehabilitation projects including load ratings, service life analysis, and rehabilitation detail design.
• Assist with dive operations including dive safety planning, equipment maintenance, inspection record tracking, and planning training events.
• Support the mobilization and demobilization of diving equipment small boat operations and mobilization/demobilization of dive and survey equipment
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies in the field

Required Qualifications

• 0–5 years of relevant professional experience
• ADCI Entry Level Tender/Diver Certification
• Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, structural, ocean, coastal, or related discipline) from an ABET-accredited program
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate (or Engineer Intern as applicable)
• Current commercial dive physical meeting ADCI Consensus Standards requirements
• Current safety certifications including:
• OSHA 10
• First Aid, CPR, and AED,
• O2 Provider
• Bloodborne Pathogens
• Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC), or ability to obtain prior to employment.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability and willingness to travel and work outdoors in variable weather, tidal, and current conditions.
• Ability and willingness to support overnight travel and non-standard hours.
• Strong quantitative/math and analytical skills
• Core competency in Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail
• Ability to pass pre-employment and periodic drug and alcohol screening.

Preferred Qualfications

• ADCI Air Diver certification
• Master’s degree in engineering (civil, structural, ocean, coastal, or related discipline) from an ABET-accredited program
• Professional Engineering (PE) license in New York and/or New Jersey.
• Documented experience performing waterfront inspections per ASCE MOP 130, NYCEDC Waterfront Inspection Manual, and/or PANYNJ.
• Experience working with underwater non-destructive testing equipment.
• Point Cloud Modelling and/or Hydrographic survey experience.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, or GIS (ArcGIS Pro)
• Structural analysis software experience (e.g., RISA, SAP2000, STAAD)
• Asset management experience including the development and/or management of asset databases
• Current safety certifications including:
• OSHA 30
• HAZWOPER 40-hour
• Boat operator certification and/or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S)

Physical Requirements

This position requires operating as a commercial diver and tender during commercial diving operations in an industrial environment. This requires, but is not limited to having the ability to load and unload commercial diving equipment from vessels and trucks; don and dof commercial diving equipment; enter and exit the water in commercial diving equipment via ladders, fulfill the requirements of a standby diver; and operate in low temperature, low visibility, and high current underwater environments.
