About the Role

We are recruiting on behalf of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for an Engineer 4 (Senior Design Engineer) supporting the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Rapid Response Team. Up to two engineers will be hired — one in electrical engineering and one in civil/structural engineering. Both positions are design engineering roles supporting projects at and around TA-55.

You will be responsible for assigned activities within your engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation, and maintenance, applying broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. The role covers all aspects of work in engineering operations within the discipline, including conventional design and analysis, construction and project support, and coordination of inter-disciplinary activities.

This is a senior position. You will be expected to work independently and as part of a team, and you may lead projects and supervise the work of others.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and lead activities within your engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Apply broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses.
  • Perform conventional and unique design and analysis within your discipline.
  • Perform all aspects of work in engineering operations and coordinate inter-disciplinary activities.
  • Identify system integration activities within and across engineering disciplines.
  • Provide construction and project support, and integrate construction and project activities.
  • Lead projects and supervise the work of others as assigned.
  • Utilize engineering technology to accomplish work, and identify and manage work process improvements to meet customer needs.
Required Education & Experience

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of nine (9) years of practical work experience sufficient to perform the responsibilities outlined above. An advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in these positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

Top Skills & Requirements
  • Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy / National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to your engineering discipline.
  • Proven knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASCE, ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, NEC, and similar).
  • Senior-level understanding of common engineering design document deliverables.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to lead projects and supervise the work of others.
Security Clearance

This position requires the ability to receive and hold a DOE “Q” clearance and to participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications
  • An advanced engineering or technical degree.
  • Experience in the use of common computer-aided drafting or mark-up software.
  • A DOE “Q” or “L” clearance currently held or held within the past two (2) years.
  • Prior design engineering experience at a DOE or NNSA nuclear facility.
