Job summary

Pike Corporation is seeking a substation protection and control design engineer to provide design, engineering support, and technical leadership for transmission substation projects, including battery energy storage systems and solar substations. You will apply protection concepts and SCADA design to deliver safe, cost-effective engineering solutions.

You will design protection schemes for substations and lines, perform coordination studies, fault current calculations, and insulation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET/EAC accredited Engineering Program or approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES
  • 0 to 2 years' experience as a practicing engineer
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles

Responsibilities

  • Design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment (bus, line, capacitor, transformer protection)
  • Perform studies and create reports for coordination, fault current, and insulation coordination
  • Understand SCADA communication design and integrate with protection schemes
  • Visit sites to advise on P&C engineering issues and modify designs during construction
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines to ensure accuracy and adherence to customer standards

Job description

Position Overview: Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to understand protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
  • Ability to design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
  • Ability to understand SCADA communication design
  • Quickly develop a basic understanding of protection and control design for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
  • Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
  • Ability to perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
  • Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
  • Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
  • Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines
  • Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master's or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
  • 0 to 2 years' experience as a practicing engineer
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
