Job summary

Pike Engineering is seeking a seasoned engineer to lead protection and control design for substation and transmission projects in Florida. You will guide a team, oversee budgets and schedules, and ensure high-quality engineering and design services for diverse projects including battery storage and solar substations.

The role requires 5–7 years of engineering experience, ABET-accredited degree (or NCEES evaluation/advanced degree), and PE licensure or imminent licensure.

Qualifications

• 5 to 7 years’ experience as a practicing engineer.
• Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program or approved NCEES evaluation of non-ABET credentials or a advanced degree from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Licensed Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain licensure within one year.

Responsibilities

• Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals for substation and transmission line equipment.
• Design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment (bus, line, capacitor, transformer) and settings.
• Understand SCADA communication design.
• Lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity.
• Proficient in project management principles (budgets, schedules).
• Basic understanding of substation design and equipment arrangements.
• Create P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules.
• Read, interpret, design, and engineer P&C designs up to 500kV (one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, SCADA).
• Perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, insulation coordination.
• Run calculations and studies using client software/standards.
• Oversee junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
• Check designs for accuracy and compliance with customer standards.
• Collaborate with other disciplines, contractors, suppliers, and clients.
• Visit sites to advise on P&C issues and modify designs during construction.
• Manage budgets and project schedules.

Job description

Position Overview

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development and project cost estimating.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Proficient in design of protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer design and protection schemes and associated settings
• Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design
• Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity
• Proficient in principles of project management
• Basic understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements
• Create substation P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects
• Ability to read, interpret, design, and engineer P&C designs for utility stations through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
• Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
• Perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
• Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters
• Experience checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients
• Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction
• Manage budgets and project schedules

Requirements

• 5 to 7 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• Licensed Professional Engineer or the ability to be licenses within one year
