Job summary

Pike Engineering, a division of Pike Corporation, seeks a Substation Protection and Control Engineer to deliver safe, cost-effective engineering and design services. You will provide technical direction on complex problems for substation, battery energy storage, and solar collector substations, while collaborating with other design disciplines.

Ideal candidates have ABET/EAC accredited engineering degrees, 0–2 years of experience for entry level roles, and strong written and verbal communication

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or equivalent evaluation.
• 0–2 years’ engineering experience for entry level.
• Solid understanding of engineering principles and design processes.

Responsibilities

• Provide protection and control design, engineering, and technical oversight for substation projects.
• Design protection schemes for substation and transmission equipment.
• Interpret specifications and implement them on engineering drawings.
• Collaborate with multi-discipline design teams and site-based staff.
• Visit sites to advise on P&C issues and modify designs during construction.

Job description

Position Overview

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ability to understand protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
• Ability to design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
• Ability to understand SCADA communication design
• Quickly develop a basic understanding of protection and control design for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
• Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
• Ability to perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
• Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines
• Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• 0 to 2 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
