Job summary

Pike Engineering is seeking a Substation Protection & Control Engineer to support a transmission substation design team. You will contribute to protection scheme design, SCADA interfaces, and coordination studies for high voltage projects up to 500 kV.

Successful candidates have an engineering degree, 0–2 years of experience, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, visit project sites, and communicate findings clearly. EOE/Non-Union.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent with ABET credentials.
• Understanding of protection and control fundamentals for substations.
• Experience or familiarity with SCADA interfaces and coordination studies.

Responsibilities

• Understand protection and control fundamentals for substation and transmission line equipment.
• Design protection schemes for bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and settings.
• Understand SCADA communication design.
• Develop understanding of protection and control design up to 500kV including drawings and wiring.
• Perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, insulation coordination.
• Perform calculations using client software and standards.
• Interpret specifications and implement on engineering drawings.
• Check designs for accuracy and adherence to customer standards.
• Collaborate with other design disciplines.
• Visit sites to advise on P&C engineering issues and modify designs during construction.

Job description

Position Overview

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ability to understand protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
• Ability to design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
• Ability to understand SCADA communication design
• Quickly develop a basic understanding of protection and control design for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
• Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
• Ability to perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
• Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines
• Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• 0 to 2 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
