About Our Client
Our client is an international commodities trading firm known for its analytical, data-driven approach and disciplined risk culture. The firm trades power, natural gas, environmental products, and other commodities across Europe, North America, and Asia, and is expanding its U.S. trading presence with the addition of an experienced Energy Trader to its Houston team.
The Role
The Energy Trader will develop and execute trading strategies in North American power and/or natural gas markets, manage positions and risk within established limits, and contribute to the growth of the firm's U.S. book. This is a hands-on seat for a commercially minded trader who pairs strong market intuition with rigorous fundamental and quantitative analysis. You'll work closely with analysts, quants, scheduling, and risk teams in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute trading strategies in U.S. power and/or natural gas markets (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, Henry Hub and regional gas hubs)
- Trade physical and financial products across spot, prompt, and forward curves, including spreads, options, and other structured positions
- Build and maintain fundamental views on supply, demand, weather, generation, transmission, storage, and pipeline dynamics
- Manage positions and P&L within approved risk limits and the firm's risk management framework
- Partner with analytics and data science teams to build and refine models, forecasts, and trading signals
- Coordinate with scheduling, operations, and middle office to ensure accurate trade capture, scheduling, and settlement
- Develop and maintain relationships with counterparties, brokers, and exchanges
- Monitor regulatory and market developments affecting North American energy markets
- Contribute to the growth of the U.S. trading business, including new market and product opportunities
Qualifications
- 5+ years of trading experience in North American power and/or natural gas markets at a trading firm, utility, energy merchant, bank, or hedge fund
- Demonstrated track record of generating P&L while managing risk
- Strong understanding of ISO/RTO market structures, gas pipeline and storage fundamentals, and energy derivatives
- Highly analytical with strong quantitative skills; experience with Python, SQL, Power BI, or similar tools is a strong plus
- Ability to make quick, disciplined decisions under pressure
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-first approach
- Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, or a related field
Preferred
- Experience with environmental products (RECs, carbon, or emissions allowances)
- Familiarity with ETRM systems and trade execution platforms (e.g., ICE, CME, Nodal)
- Experience within a global or European-headquartered trading organization
