SAN VP of Talent Strategy and Development

About Us: Straight Arrow News is dedicated to delivering unbiased, comprehensive news coverage that cuts through the noise of national discourse. We prize stories that make the news feel real and relevant to our audiences’ daily lives. Check us out at www.san.com and on the SAN mobile app.

About the Role: SAN is looking for an experienced, enterprising energy reporter with a track record of breaking news and telling original energy stories. The ideal reporter does not look at the industry through the lens of a policy wonk. Instead, they search for the human impact behind energy decisions, advancements and needs that shape the future. This is an opportunity to carve out a distinct space in energy reporting. The right candidate has a strong network of sources, a nose for news and is a powerful storyteller.

Did you break a story about the REAP funding freeze through the eyes of a farmer? Are you covering the water rights controversy on the banks of the Columbia River? Are you steeped in sources on rare earth minerals, fossil fuels or renewable energy? Do you have abundant stories to tell about energy and resource needs in the age of AI and EVs? We want to hear from you.

Responsibilities:

  • Break exclusive, timely stories on the energy sector.
  • Own the beat by providing a mix of content, from quick-turns to in-depth investigative pieces. Collaborate with editors to refine ideas and deliver high-impact stories.
  • Report on and write breaking news and major updates that impact the energy sector and our audience.
  • Build and maintain a network of sources to stay ahead of the news cycle.
  • Develop your own beat within energy and become the go-to expert in that field.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards of journalism. Ensure accuracy, clarity and originality in all reporting.
  • Provide fair coverage of controversial issues that stays true to SAN’s mission of unbiased journalism.
  • Collaborate with SAN’s multimedia and marketing teams to highlight your journalism on shows, podcasts, videos and social media.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience as an energy reporter with a track record of breaking original stories.
  • A strong network of sources within energy.
  • Exceptional research, writing and storytelling skills. Skilled in writing in AP Style.
  • Commitment to accuracy, clarity and unbiased storytelling.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple assignments.

How To Apply:

Step 1: Apply to the LinkedIn job posting with an updated resume.

Step 2: Please send work samples (cover letter is optional) to careers@san.com and include “Energy Reporter” in the subject line. Please send your work samples as a PDF if they are behind a paywall.
