Diversified Safety Services is seeking an experienced Energy Marshal to join our team and support a project in Chester, VA. This role offers the opportunity to play a critical role in driving a culture of safety, ensuring compliance, and fostering a proactive approach to workplace health and safety on a large-scale, high-visibility project.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and administer the site Energy Marshal Program, covering both electrical and mechanical energy management activities.
- Partner with Electrical and Mechanical Trade Partners, Commissioning (Cx), EHS, the GC, Client, vendors, and applicable SMEs to safely coordinate energization, startup, commissioning, LOTO, and hazardous energy activities.
- Review, approve, and audit electrical and mechanical LOTO plans, energy management permits, and site-specific procedures; conduct field inspections to ensure compliance.
- Identify electrical, mechanical, and hazardous energy risks in the field and coordinate appropriate mitigation measures.
- Review energization, startup, and commissioning schedules to ensure required Step-by-Step (SBS) procedures and LOTO plans are approved and in place prior to execution.
- Review and approve SBS procedures, including First Time Energizations (FTE), and verify applicable electrical activities comply with NFPA 70E requirements.
- Review Energized Electrical Work (EEW) permits for work at or above 50V and enforce requirements restricting energized work in accordance with NFPA 70E.
- Oversee mechanical LOTO and hazardous energy control for equipment and systems including ACCs, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, water/piping systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Review mechanical equipment startup procedures and coordinate with appropriate SMEs on pressure testing and other activities requiring discipline-specific technical expertise.
- Coordinate de-energization, re-energization, shutdowns, and equipment turnover between the Client, Trade Partners, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Verify appropriate access controls are established for energized electrical rooms and controlled mechanical/system areas.
- Verify qualified personnel are properly designated and trained for high-risk activities, including LOTO, Live-Dead-Live (LDL), infrared scanning, and other applicable energy management activities.
- Provide and audit site‑specific energy management training, including LOTO, electrical/substation access, hazard identification, and mechanical energy isolation procedures.
- Maintain oversight of energy management documentation and equipment status, including single‑line diagrams, LOTO status, energized/de‑energized status, and equipment turnover.
- Conduct routine job walks and program audits to verify energy management processes, permits, procedures, PPE, test equipment, and safety controls meet project requirements.
- Participate in Cause Analysis events, prepare associated Client reports, and track energy management‑related corrective actions through resolution.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands‑on construction safety experience, preferably MEP scope or data center environment.
- Previous experience as an Energy Marshal
- NFPA 70E is required
- LOTO is required
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA guidelines, regulations, and safety programs.
- Ability to produce clear reports, develop procedures, and implement effective safety solutions.
- Excellent hazard recognition, data analysis, and risk assessment skills.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication abilities.
- Professional on‑site presence and the ability to lead teams through incidents or emergencies with composure.
