Job description

Overview

Maryland Energy Advisors (MDEA) is a rapidly growing energy management firm delivering energy efficiency and sustainability programs for utilities and communities across the region. As part of our continued expansion, we are seeking a qualified Home Energy Auditor to support residential energy efficiency and home weatherization programs throughout New Jersey. In this role, you will conduct in-home energy assessments for income-qualified and residential customers, identifying energy-saving opportunities, educating homeowners, and supporting the delivery of utility-funded energy efficiency measures. You will work closely with program managers, field services staff, contractors, and utility partners to ensure audits are completed accurately, safely, and in compliance with program guidelines and quality standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, customer-focused, and comfortable working in the field. Strong communication skills, technical aptitude, and a commitment to delivering a positive customer experience are essential. If you enjoy hands-on work, problem-solving, and making a tangible impact on household energy affordability and comfort, this is an excellent opportunity to grow with a mission-driven organization supporting New Jersey communities.

Base pay range

$62,000.00/yr - $70,000.00/yr

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support the day-to-day operations of a residential utility energy efficiency and home weatherization program, ensuring high-quality service delivery and a positive customer experience for eligible households.
  • Generate and manage audit leads through door-to-door outreach and community-based engagement within assigned neighborhoods, representing the program professionally and in alignment with utility guidelines.
  • Perform in-home and visual energy assessments of residential properties, evaluating HVAC systems, windows, doors, insulation, appliances, lighting, and other building components to identify energy efficiency opportunities.
  • Educate residents on household energy use, comfort, health, and safety, and provide clear guidance on practical actions and utility incentives that can reduce energy costs.
  • Prepare and deliver energy assessment reports with personalized recommendations, ensuring accurate documentation and data entry in program tracking systems.
  • Install eligible no-cost or low-cost direct-install energy-saving measures in accordance with program requirements and safety protocols.
  • Introduce and refer residents to additional utility-sponsored programs and services, supporting increased program participation and comprehensive energy savings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the successful execution of program field operations.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in residential energy auditing, building science, weatherization, or utility-funded energy efficiency programs.
  • Strong knowledge of residential energy audits, weatherization practices, and direct-install energy efficiency measures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and educate customers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to field-based challenges with professionalism and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a field services team.
  • Comfort using technology, including handheld data collection devices, mobile applications, and program tracking systems.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, and working in various residential environments.
  • Flexible availability, including occasional evenings and weekends based on customer and program needs.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening, as required by utility and program partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BPI certification preferred. If not currently certified, MDEA will provide training and support to obtain BPI certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Energy, Environmental Studies, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Experience supporting utility-sponsored energy efficiency or demand response programs for utilities, state or local governments, or nonprofit organizations.
  • Prior experience with door-to-door outreach, customer acquisition, or lead generation in residential settings.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in New Jersey communities) is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with New Jersey Clean Energy or other regional home weatherization and residential energy efficiency programs.
  • Strong time-management skills and demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of field activities across multiple neighborhoods.
Work Environment
  • This position is primarily field based, with most of the time spent conducting in-home energy audits and assessments at residential properties.
  • Auditors work independently in customers’ homes across assigned service territories, traveling daily between audit locations.
  • Work is performed in a variety of residential settings and may involve basements, attics, crawlspaces, and utility rooms.
  • This role requires regular interaction with homeowners and occupants, emphasizing professionalism, safety, and customer service.
  • Limited administrative and reporting tasks are completed remotely or from home using mobile and cloud-based program systems.
