Job summary

Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University seeks to fill a full-time, faculty appointment to the Reverend Charles R. Millikan Endowed Chair in Spiritual Care. Position begins August 1, 2027.

This is an open rank search for a full-time tenure-track or tenured appointment. The chair will teach across Perkins degree programs, develop scholarship in spiritual care and chaplaincy, and lead curricula and programming in chaplaincy studies, with collaboration across SMU and healthcare

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in theology or related field.
• Demonstrated scholarship and teaching in spiritual care, pastoral care, chaplaincy studies, or related fields.
• Open rank with commitment to tenure-track/tenured appointment and to teaching in all Perkins programs and modes (in-person, online, hybrid).
• Preferred: Ordination in a Christian communion; CPE training and certification.

Responsibilities

• Full-time teaching and scholarship in Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy Studies across Perkins degree programs and, if appropriate, in Ph.D. curricula.
• Scholarly publications and professional activity in Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy Studies.
• Lead curricula and programming in chaplaincy studies and engage with hospitals, CPE programs, and ministry partners.
• Participate in governance and life of Perkins School of Theology, the Graduate Program in Religious Studies, and SMU.
