Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Casual Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) to join the Center for Emergency Medicine - Ambulance and Chair. The role supports 911 and non-emergency transport across urban to rural areas with a focus on patient-centered care and safety.

The EMT-Basic will provide high-quality prehospital care, operate ambulances, and participate in continuing education and research initiatives. A flexible schedule with 12 hours per month and multiple shift modalities is offered.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current Pennsylvania EMT-Basic certification.
• Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Current BLS card.
• EMS Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) certificate.
• Ability to meet physical demands including lifting/moving patients.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and remain calm in high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

• Respond to 911 and non-emergency calls in a safe, timely, and professional manner.
• Perform patient assessments and provide Basic Life Support care within PA scope of practice.
• Safely operate ambulances and related equipment in emergency and non-emergency conditions.
• Assist with patient movement, lifting, and transport using powered stretchers and loading systems.
• Accurately complete electronic patient care reports.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, dispatch, hospitals, and partner agencies.
• Maintain readiness of vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
• Participate in continuing education, training, quality improvement, and research initiatives.
