Job summary

Forsyth County Emergency Services seeks an EMS Lieutenant (Operations) to lead field training, supervise Paramedics, and ensure compliance with department protocols. You will train, mentor, and evaluate EMS personnel, oversee the clearance process, and serve as a liaison between Quality Management and shift supervision.

In a high‑pressure environment, you will implement training plans, lead projects and initiatives, perform Medic I duties, and act as acting EMS Captain when assigned.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• NC EMT-Paramedic credential required.
• Completion of established Field Training Methodology Course.
• Competency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Cleared QRV Medic.
• 1 year EMS Paramedic Crew Chief experience.
• 2 years NC Credentialed Paramedic in 911 system.
• EMS Officer I course (preferred).
• Associate degree in EMS or related field (Preferred).

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls providing ALS level care per current protocols, equipment, and vehicles.
• Train, coach, and evaluate employees through the clearance process.
• Supervise EMT-Basic reports and conduct annual performance evaluations.
• Serve as liaison between Quality Management and shift supervision with effective communication.
• Perform Medic I duties and provide advanced prehospital care.
• Act as EMS Captain when assigned, overseeing operations in a designated area.
• Provide mentorship to junior EMS personnel.
• Assist with training plans, remediation plans, and operational improvement initiatives.
• Conduct field evaluations and deliver training assessments.
• Ensure compliance with Forsyth County EMS protocols, QA expectations, and guidelines.
• Complete projects from EMS Battalion Chiefs/Captains.
• Maintain records related to training, supervision, and patient care.
• Participate in continuing education and leadership programs.
• Lift and move patients/equipment >100 lbs with assistance.
• Stand/walk/bend/kneel/climb/reach during operations.
• Work in hazardous or confined environments.
• Operate EMS vehicles/equipment per standards.
• Maintain stamina for extended operations.

The EMS Lieutenant (Operations) serves as a Field Trainer Officer and performs the duties of a Medic I while functioning as a ride‑up supervisor in the absence of a shift Captain. This position is responsible for training and evaluating employees in the clearance process and serves as a liaison between Quality Management and shift supervision. The EMS Lieutenant (Operations) provides supervisory coverage for a designated operational area when assigned as an acting EMS Captain and may be tasked by EMS Battalion Chiefs or EMS Captains to lead or complete projects, training initiatives, or operational assignments.

This position requires strong leadership, high accountability, and a commitment to Forsyth County Emergency Services operational standards. Work involves mentorship, coaching, direct field training, and ensuring quality and compliance with departmental procedures. The EMS Lieutenant (Operations) must demonstrate sound judgment, independent decision‑making, and effective communication while working in a dynamic and high‑pressure environment.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• North Carolina EMT‑Paramedic Credential
• ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800
• Completion of an established Field Training Methodology Course
• Competency with Microsoft Office Suite and Ninth Brain platform
• Cleared QRV Medic
• One year experience as an EMS Paramedic Crew Chief
• Two years’ experience as a North Carolina Credentialed Paramedic working within a 911 prehospital system
• Completion of EMS Officer I course (preferred)
• Associate’s degree in EMS, Emergency Management, Public Safety or another related field (Preferred)

• Must be able to lift, carry, and move patients and equipment in excess of 100 lbs with assistance.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching during emergency response activities.
• Ability to work in hazardous, confined, or unstable environments during rescue or medical operations.
• Must be able to operate EMS vehicles and equipment according to department standards.
• Must maintain sufficient physical stamina for extended emergency operations.
