Job summary

City of Colorado Springs is seeking an EMS Field Specialist to lead prehospital education and training for the Fire Medical Division. You will ensure compliance with state EMS rules, coordinate training programs, and improve delivery methods.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of full-time paramedic or educator experience.
• 2 years of EMS training curriculum instruction required.
• Valid driver’s license without restrictions related to alcohol/drug violations.
• Current ACLS, CPR, and NREMT-P or Colorado State Paramedic Certification.
• CPR Instructor and ACLS/BLS Instructor certifications required.
• Within 12 months of hire, ICS 100, 200, 700 certifications.

Responsibilities

• Ensure program compliance with EMS codes, laws, and City policies.
• Assist with medical quality assurance and education delivery.
• Oversee EMS training programs, scheduling, and goals implementation.
• Monitor training program performance and implement modifications as needed.
• Maintain communication with Medical Division staff and QA coordinator.
• Maintain training equipment and supply needs, research new equipment.
• Provide oversight of EMT and paramedic certifications.
• Develop and provide renewal classes for medical certifications.
• Maintain CE hours system and develop training materials and objectives.
• Coordinate initial EMT certification training for recruit academy.
• Evaluate EMTs/paramedics during calls for service.
• Develop innovative methods for prehospital EMS education.
• Maintain current prehospital medical guidelines and participate in committees.

Essential Job Functions

• Ensure program compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local codes, laws, and ordinances and City policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
• Assist the Fire Medical Program Coordinator with medical quality assurance and education delivery
• Oversee, coordinate, implement, and schedule EMS training and education programs; recommend and assist in the implementation of Medical Division training goals and objectives; and perform technical duties in support of all medical training
• Monitor medical training program performance; evaluate program effectiveness; and recommend and implement modifications as needed
• Maintain communication with other Medical Division staff, including Medical Divisionstafflieutenant, field medical lieutenants, and the quality assurance coordinator
• Maintain medical training equipment and supplies; make recommendations for new equipment based on research
• Provide oversight of all EMT and paramedic certifications
• Develop and provide classes for renewing all required medical certifications for CSFD personnel
• Maintain the CE (continuing education) hours system; assist with development of training programs
• Develop training materials, including lesson plans, class syllabi, learning objectives, and evaluations
• Ensure CSFD EMTs and paramedics are provided with necessary CE hours in all required topics
• Coordinate and provide initial EMT certification training for the CSFD recruit training academy, including EMS medical week
• Evaluate EMTs and paramedics while responding to calls for service
• Develop new and innovative methods for the delivery of prehospital EMS education
• Develop and maintain current and future prehospital medical guidelines
• Participate on various EMS related committees and represent the mission of the CSFD Medical Division

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

• Knowledge of rules and regulations of the State EMS division
• Knowledge of modern office technology
• Knowledge of methods and techniques of data collection and statistical analysis
• Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping and report preparation
• Ability to prepare clear and concise quantitative reports
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to present educational material in both classroom and practical settings

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, education, life sciences, nursing, EMS, or a related field
• Five years of full-time experience as a paramedic or educator
• Two years of full-time EMS training curriculum instruction
• Possess, or obtain upon hire, a valid, non-probationary driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
• Possess current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and NREMT-P (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic) or Colorado State Paramedic Certification
• Possess, or obtain upon hire, CPR Instructor and ACLS/BLS Instructor certifications
• Possess, or obtain within twelve months of hire, IC (Incident Command System) 100, 200, and 700 certifications

• National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor Level 1 and/or Level 2 certification
• Experience with education curriculum development and lesson planning
• Possess working knowledge of current City of Colorado Springs prehospital practice guidelines

This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year, and any furloughs subsequently approved.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 to 100 pounds frequently, and 20 to 50 pounds constantly.
