Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA seeks a Communication Specialist I for the Ambulance Dispatch team. EMT‑B/I or Paramedic certification is required; BLS-HCP must be obtained within 3 months.

Responsible for fast, accurate call screening and dispatch of ground ambulances to ensure patient safety and care. The role includes coordinating with Transfer Center, handling sensitive information, and working in a dynamic call center environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior experience in a call center, 911 dispatch center, or as an Emergency Medical Services provider required.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider (AHA BLS -HCP) required within 3 months of hire.
• Virginia EMT-B certification required.
• Must be proficient with keyboarding/typing and use of software applications, including Windows.

Responsibilities

• Receives and screens calls to minimize delays.
• Identifies and prioritizes emergency calls and dispatches units quickly.
• Determines level of care and transport mode based on CCPT scope of practice.
• Schedules trips and dispatches ground ambulances with timely updates to requestors.
• Maintains patient data privacy and reviews electronic medical records for accurate resource matching.
