The University of Rochester’s Center for Community Health & Prevention seeks a dedicated Employment Navigator for the THSP program in Rochester. You will provide employment support, mentor teens, and coordinate worksite and academic development across UR campuses and partner sites.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide employment support and mentorship to approximately 50 THSP participants.
  • Meet in-person monthly with THSP high school students, coaching them on workplace expectations and responsibilities.
  • Create worksite, academic, social, and professional development plans for THSP participants.
  • Maintain monthly contact with department supervisors and respond to THSP participants' and URochester supervisors' needs.
  • Provide workplace readiness support and interview potential THSP participants.
  • Coordinate program compliance for child labor laws, OSHA and environmental health and safety guidelines, and URochester mandates.
  • Supervise interns and THSP student employees.
  • Develop relationships with partner organizations and market partnership opportunities.
  • Track student progress and program effectiveness via spreadsheets and data systems.

Responsibilities

The Center for Community Health & Prevention works to create environments that support healthy behaviors, encompassing a variety of programs and initiatives aimed at preventing disease to create a healthier community. The Center for Community Health & Prevention’s Teen Health and Success Partnership (THSP) program matches local high school students with employment opportunities at the University of Rochester and provides hiring and employment assistance to support students’ long-term career success. The THSP aims to provide local students with the vision and job skills for a range of educational and career options after graduation and enables URochester departments to employ well-prepared youth from the local community. The THSP Employment Navigator is the lead liaison for employed teens and their URochester supervisor as it relates to worksite deliverables, academic achievement, professional development, and career planning. They will be assigned to manage projects and events depending on organizational need, staff availability, and to maximize the skills and talents of individual team members. They will also develop and format communications materials such as presentations and reports related to assigned programs and projects and assist students through the hiring process as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • The Employment Navigator works independently to provide employment support and career-based mentorship to approximately 50 assigned participants of the THSP program.
  • They use best practices from evidence-based youth development models to assist participants in achieving positive education outcomes and employment retention. This includes meeting in-person monthly with THSP high school students, coaching them on workplace expectations and specific job responsibilities.
  • Creating worksite, academic, social, and professional development plans for THSP participants.
  • Maintaining monthly contact with department supervisors who employ THSP students and responding to a broad range of urgent and non-urgent needs of THSP young adult participants and their URochester supervisors.
  • Providing workplace readiness support and interviewing potential THSP participants.
  • Coordinating program compliance for child labor law, OSHA and environmental health and safety guidelines, and URochester mandatories.
  • Supervising interns and THSP student employees.
  • Developing strong relationships with partner organizations.
  • Maintaining and marketing partnership opportunities with URochester departments in order to identify career paths and resources for students and opportunities for new jobs and promotions.
  • Supporting THSP program graduates with identifying and applying for promotions within the University that align with their academic and career goals.
  • In addition, maintaining regular contact with prospective departments and serving as liaisons and collaborators with URochester programs and community organizations with similar missions.
  • Tracking student progress and program effectiveness by maintaining the program’s spreadsheets and data system and analyzing data.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience required Coursework in public/community health, education, social work, counseling, adolescent development, or human resources and / or a graduate degree in related field preferred. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously required.
  • Proven experience in budget management and financial reporting required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools and software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Experience working with youth preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks and identify work priorities preferred.
  • Ability to travel to various locations within the City of Rochester, and some evening and weekend hours are expected.
