Director of Human Resources - Internal HR

Employers Council is seeking a full-time Employment Law Staff Attorney to join our team. We partner with employers to foster exceptional, dynamic workplaces by offering comprehensive services.

With over 85 years of experience, our dedicated staff provide top-tier guidance to help organizations create supportive and engaging cultures.

Location: 6005 Delmonico Drive, Suite 250, Colorado Springs, CO 80919 (Hybrid; opportunities for remote work with regular in-office and member location visits)

Type: Full-time Exempt

Salary Range: $113,400 - $133,900

Position Summary

The Employment Law Attorney should have practical, solutions-driven counseling skills with a client-service approach. Key capabilities include multi-tasking and managing ambiguity in law, processes, and procedures. A solid understanding of employment law areas such as discrimination, harassment, disability, accommodations, employee policies, and wage and hour laws (e.g., Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, ADA, OSHA, and related state laws) is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Advise employers on complex legal issues, including performance documentation, discipline, termination, layoffs, employment agreements, waivers, non-compete agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members through various communication channels.
  • Meet with members in person to orient and engage them, demonstrating Employers Council’s employment law expertise.
  • Provide independent, competent, and confident legal advice to management and business leaders on employment law matters.
  • Understand legal and business priorities, helping build consensus among stakeholders such as HR professionals and management.
  • Evaluate and analyze EEO/Civil Rights claims, draft position statements, and represent employers in agency proceedings.
  • Advise on compliance with federal and state laws, including wage and hour, Title VII, ADA, FMLA, Workers Compensation, and anti-discrimination statutes.
  • Support member engagement through assessments and strategy meetings to promote awareness of services.
  • Represent employers in administrative hearings, including unemployment and wage claims.
  • Create and update member resources like white papers, policies, sample agreements, webinars, and blog articles.
  • Deliver live and virtual training on topics such as harassment, EEO law, termination, wage and hour, FMLA, disability law, and performance documentation.
  • Prepare multimedia training materials and conduct interactive sessions at Employers Council or member locations.
  • Review employee handbooks, policies, and procedures from a legal perspective.
  • Present on employment law topics to community and industry groups of varying sizes.
  • Advise on employee relations, risk management, policies, and HR issues.
  • Conduct legal research using platforms like Westlaw.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Education

Requirements include a JD degree, Colorado Bar admission (multistate licensure a plus), 1-3 years employment law experience preferred, and proficiency in relevant software. Candidates should reside within commuting distance of Colorado Springs and have a passion for customer service. Occasional travel is expected.
