Job summary

Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading, PA is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant to perform gross examination and sectioning of surgical pathology specimens under supervision.

The PA ensures timely grossing and coordinates with the Grossing area, other laboratory sections, and surgical services. Responsibilities include maintaining records per department standards and being prepared to cross-train in other pathology sections as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from NACCLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program, or a related bachelor’s degree with 2 years PA experience.
  • Equivalency evaluations for international-trained applicants to CLIA standards.

  • Ensure timely completion of grossing according to protocols.
  • Coordinate between Grossing, lab sections, surgical services and providers.
  • Maintain records, logs and files per department standards and accrediting bodies.
  • Cross-train or assist in other pathology sections as needed.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Pathologists’ Assistant (NACCLS-accredited program)

Hours: 8:00a - 4:30p, weekends as needed

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Pathologists’ Assistant (PA), under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pathologist, performs the gross examination and sectioning of surgical pathology specimens. The PA will ensure timely completion of grossing surgical specimens, following specific protocols to aid in patient diagnosis. Coordinates functions between the Grossing area and other laboratory sections, surgical services and providers. Maintains various records, log and files as required by department standards, regulatory and accrediting organizations. Cross training or assisting in other sections of the pathology laboratory may occur as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
  • Either Bachelor’s Degree from a NACCLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant educational program required or Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field plus two (2) years of experience of on the job training as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
  • Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex. National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
  • ASCP certification preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant in an academic hospital setting preferred.
