The Employee Relations Specialist is responsible for handling conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, investigations, reasonable accommodation, Family and Medical Leave, leaves of absence, and program/team restructuring that may include position changes and layoffs, for a non-union department of Muskegon County. The Employee Relations Specialist is responsible for training HealthWest supervisory staff in employee relations topics, providing mentoring and coaching, and developing supervisory competency. The person in this position works closely with the Muskegon County Human Resources Compliance Supervisor when handling employee relations issues to ensure HealthWest is complying with Muskegon County Personnel Rules and procedures. The Employee Relations Specialist gathers information for subpoenas and participates in legal proceedings as requested by the Muskegon County Human Resources Compliance Supervisor. The overarching goal for this position is to create a transparent employee relations process that makes staff feel confident that it is fair and equitable. In addition, the position aims to develop supervisory staff who are not only confident in their jobs but also have confidence in the guidance and training they receive from Human Resources.
An employee in this class performs generally sedentary work requiring the occasional lifting of objects weighing thirty-five (35) pounds or less.
An employee in this class works remotely in a home office, but travels to HealthWest locations to attend meetings, training, conduct investigations, and provide staff assistance. The person in this position also travels to other county locations and out of county for other events such as training, conferences, meetings, etc.

Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
