Emergency Veterinary Technician

The Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in West Caldwell, NJ is hiring a dedicated and enthusiastic Certified Veterinary Technician/Experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our Emergency team!

Founded in 1977, the Animal Emergency Group was created to meet the growing demand for specialized around-the-clock emergency care for pets. As one of the first hospitals in the nation dedicated exclusively to small animal emergency medicine, it set a new standard in veterinary care. It evolved into Animal Emergency & Referral Associates (AERA) in the mid-1990s, introducing a range of veterinary specialties. In 2016, AERA expanded its emergency services to operate 24/7, 365 days a year, remaining dedicated to innovation, expertise, and compassionate care.

Position Overview:

This role supports ER doctors by assisting with treatments and procedures, ensuring high-quality patient care. The ER Certified Veterinary Technician/Experienced Veterinary Assistant must be detail-oriented, uphold cleanliness and medical standards, and work collaboratively to ensure accurate, efficient, and optimal patient outcomes. Strong communication skills are essential for seamless team coordination and excellent client and patient experiences.

Compensation:
  • $23-$30 based on skill level/experience
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technicians: $26-$38 hourly
  • Sign-On Bonus offered to qualified candidates!
    • LVT: $5000!
    • VTS: $7500!
Schedule:
  • Sunday – Wednesday, 4x10 hour shifts (4pm-2am)
Key Responsibilities:
  • Triage, patient assessment, obtaining vital data, IVC placement, phlebotomy, intubations, injections, radiology, lab work, anesthesia support, CPR
  • Administer basic first aid and treatments, monitor critical and ICU patients
  • Provide stabilization support, document and communicate patient information accurately
  • Maintain clean, comfortable surroundings; set up and maintain equipment
  • Safely restrain patients, record medical histories, prepare medications, collect lab specimens
  • Assist with euthanasia and aftercare, provide client education, restock and clean areas
  • Train less experienced staff, cross-train in other hospital areas
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of applicable experience
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, medical terminology, and equipment
  • Strong communication skills, fluent in English; multilingual a plus
  • Ability to calculate dosages, handle CPR, react quickly in emergencies
  • Team-oriented, professional appearance, tactful with clients, able to work independently
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, CVT)
  • 2+ years in emergency or specialty veterinary settings
