Job summary

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Pittsburgh is seeking an experienced Emergency Veterinary Technician to join our busy Emergency and Critical Care department. This role involves anesthesia induction/monitoring, triage of emergencies, and radiography, with a focus on monitoring vital signs and patient comfort.

You will perform phlebotomy, IV catheter placement, feeding tube care, and central line management, while mentoring coworkers and addressing client concerns.

Qualifications

  • Experience as an Emergency Veterinary Technician is preferred.
  • Ability to monitor anesthesia and use related equipment.
  • Proficiency in triage, radiography, and patient vital signs interpretation.
  • Comfort with phlebotomy, IV access, and critical care procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Induce, monitor and recover anesthesia in emergency patients.
  • Triage emergencies and record vitals (temp, HR, RR, BP).
  • Perform digital radiography with proper patient positioning.
  • Interpret vital signs and alert Veterinarian to changes.
  • Identify arrest risk and initiate CPR.
  • Compute medical math and administer medications as prescribed.
  • Place IV catheters and perform phlebotomy.
  • Place feeding tubes and manage central lines as needed.
  • Mentor and train other staff.
  • Provide empathetic client communication.

BluePearl Pet Hospital** is hiring experienced Veterinary Technicians to work in our busy Emergency and Critical Care department.**

Pay: $21.10 - $40.60 / hour
This pay band is a starting point and is dependent on experience and advancement through our leveling system
** Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience **

We also offer competitive shift differential pay for eligible hours worked for nights and weekends.

*Shift differentials are based on a 4-hour minimum.

For example:

  • Mon – Fri: 6pm to 8am = $4.50 Shift Differential
  • Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = $6.00 Shift Differential
  • Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = $4.50 Shift Differential
As an Emergency Veterinary Technician, you will:
  • Induce, monitor and recover anesthesia in patients and use anesthesia/monitoring equipment.
  • Triage emergency cases as they arrive at the hospital including obtaining vitals such as temperature heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure.
  • Perform digital radiography using proper technique including proper positioning of patients.
  • Have a complete understanding of normal ranges of patient vital signs, including but not limited to heart and respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.
  • Obtain and interpret blood pressure and other vital signs and alert Veterinarian to changes and issues.
  • Identify patients at risk for arrest and initiate CPR.
  • Properly calculate medical math (including constant rate infusions) and administer medications via appropriate routes and duration.
  • Are proficient at performing phlebotomy and placing intravenous catheters in all peripheral vessels.
  • Place and maintain feeding tubes and central line catheters.
  • Have a passion for mentoring and training other co-workers.
  • Have patience and empathy to address client concerns.
