Job summary

VCA Animal Hospitals in Omaha, NE seeks an Emergency Veterinary Assistant (ER/ICU) to join a fast-paced emergency and specialty services team. You will provide hands‑on care to critically ill patients and support exams, treatments, and monitoring alongside experienced veterinary professionals.

You’ll obtain vitals, assist with radiographs and blood collection, and help maintain clean, organized care areas while communicating updates to the veterinary team and reassuring clients during stressful

Qualifications

• Previous veterinary assistant or animal-care experience preferred.
• Compassionate, team-oriented approach to patient care.
• Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, hands-on care to hospitalized and emergency patients.
• Assist veterinary team with exams, treatments, procedures, and patient monitoring.
• Obtain and record patient vital signs and medical histories.
• Assist with restraint, radiographs, blood collection, catheter placement, and other patient-care activities as trained.
• Prepare treatment areas, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe patient-care areas.
• Communicate with the veterinary team regarding patient status and changes in condition.
• Help provide a positive experience for clients during what can be a stressful time.
• Support the team to ensure timely, high-quality care.

Schedule

Full-time opportunity, 3 x 12-hour shifts. Swing/Evening shift with rotating weekends and some holidays.

Compensation

Pay range is negotiable based on experience, skills, knowledge, abilities and other relevant credentials.

The Role

As an Emergency Veterinary Assistant (ER/ICU), you’ll play a critical role in patient care across emergency and specialty services. In this role, you’ll work alongside experienced veterinary professionals to provide hands‑on care to emergency and critical patients. No two shifts are the same, and you’ll have the opportunity to build your skills while supporting a wide variety of urgent and complex cases.

What You’ll Do

• Provide compassionate, hands‑on care to hospitalized and emergency patients
• Assist the veterinary team with exams, treatments, procedures, and patient monitoring
• Obtain and record patient vital signs and medical histories
• Assist with restraint, radiographs, blood collection, catheter placement, and other patient‑care activities as trained
• Prepare treatment areas, equipment, and supplies
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe patient‑care areas
• Communicate with the veterinary team regarding patient status and changes in condition
• Help provide a positive experience for clients during what can be a stressful time
• Support the team wherever needed to ensure patients receive timely, high‑quality care
