Job summary

VEG invites applications for a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant in Cambridge, MA. You’ll be in the heart of fast-paced emergencies, supporting your team, comforting pet parents, and learning on the job from day one.

This role offers growth toward credentialed technician paths and hands-on training. You’ll triage patients, assist with procedures, and collaborate with veterinarians and techs to ensure high-quality care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus).
• Basic computer skills and EMR software understanding.
• Excellent communicator with pet parents and team.
• Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 kg (40 kg with assistance).
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and triage incoming patients.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics from bloodwork to imaging.
• Work with credentialed veterinary technicians and veterinarians on anesthesia and sedation.
• Set up and manage IV fluids, blood transfusions, and medication administration.
• Assist during every moment of care: outpatient or inpatient.
• Join patient rounds and stay close to the clinical picture.
• Learn CPR and become a RECOVER Certified Rescuer (training provided).
• Grow into advanced responsibilities through guided training pathways.
