Job summary

Guthrie is seeking a per diem Emergency Services Technician to join the Emergency Department at Troy Community Hospital. You will provide hands-on patient care, support physicians and nurses, and help maintain a calm, efficient ED workflow in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities include patient transport, vital signs, phlebotomy, EKGs, IV access, and assisting with procedures under supervision. A minimum of one year paramedic experience and current BLS/ALS/PALS are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of paramedic experience.
  • BLS, ALS, and PALS certifications required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under supervision in a fast-paced ED.

Role Summary

The Emergency Services Technician provides direct patient care under the supervision of the Emergency Department Manager while supporting physicians and nursing staff in the delivery of emergency medical services. This role is responsible for assisting with patient care, performing clinical procedures, maintaining equipment, and ensuring supplies are stocked and readily available to support efficient emergency department operations.

Responsibilities
  • Adheres to the standards of care and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assists in and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
  • Assists Staff Registered Nurse in complicated treatment procedures as requested.
  • Provides patients with accurate and timely personal care, including taking and recording vital signs, temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and intake/output measurements as delegated by the Staff Registered Nurse.
  • Performs phlebotomy, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and places patients on cardiac monitors.
  • Places and/or discontinues peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter access devices.
  • Performs simple dressing changes as defined by hospital policy.
  • Assists with the application of splints and the fitting and use of crutches and walkers under the supervision of the Department Manager, Charge Nurse, or Physician.
  • Assists patients with handling and care of clothing and other personal belongings.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment by cleaning and stocking utility and equipment rooms, utilizing proper sterilization and disinfection techniques, and reporting equipment in need of repair.
  • Maintains a courteous and caring attitude toward all patients and families.
  • Assists families in the waiting area by locating patients, providing updates on patient progress, and offering exceptional customer service.
  • Appropriately handles clean and contaminated supplies throughout the department.
Other Duties
  • Communicates effectively to optimize patient care and promote positive customer relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support Emergency Department operations.
Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Paramedic experience required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in an acute care facility preferred.
  • Previous emergency department experience preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
  • New York State EMT‑Paramedic certification required, as applicable.
  • Pennsylvania EMT‑Paramedic certification required, as applicable.
  • EKG Certification preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced emergency care environment.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy, EKGs, cardiac monitoring, and IV placement.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining quality patient care.
Compensation

Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and Guthrie's established compensation practices.

  • Provides direct patient care to patients of all ages and interacts with family members as needed.
  • Frequently exposed to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous substances, and other healthcare‑related hazards.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and patient movement throughout the shift.
  • Must be able to occasionally push, move, or assist with lifting more than 100 pounds using appropriate equipment and safe patient handling techniques.
  • Requires adaptability in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity emergency environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and complies with all hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Other duties may be assigned based on departmental operational needs.
