Job summary

St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, IN seeks a Part-time Emergency Department Assistant to support nurses and staff in the ED during evenings and nights with rotating weekends and holidays. 0.8 FTE, 64 hours per pay period, benefit eligible.

Under supervision of an RN, you perform delegated tasks, basic patient care, CPR, EKGs, point-of-care testing, and transport. Requires high school level education and BLS; hospital-approved unit aide or medical assistant background preferred.

Qualifications

• Knowledge from high school level coursework or equivalent.
• Unit secretary or medical assistant background preferred.
• Fundamental knowledge of electronic medical record system.

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient care under RN supervision.
• Demonstrate skills for ED environment and CPR when needed.
• Label specimens with date/time/initials for lab.
• Perform EKGs and point-of-care testing as requested.
• Transport patients within the hospital as directed.
• Prioritize patient care activities and manage time effectively.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of an RN and according to established paractices and procedures, facilitates the provision of patient care by performing specific tasks and support functions as delegated by the staff RN.

Job Responsibilities

• Assists with the facilitation of patient care under the direction of the Staff RN
• Possesses and demonstrates skills required for the ED environment.
• Performs CPR when necessary
• Provides basic care to patients under the guidelines set forth according to hospital policies and procedures.
• Serves and or delivers patient food trays, snacks, and/or nourishment, routinely checking that patient is allowed such items.
• Feeds or assists in feeding patients as necessary
• Assists with turning of conscious or unconscious patients.
• Assists with linen changes on an occupied or unoccupied bed as needed.
• Assists with cleaning of incontinent patients as needed.
• Assists patient with ambulation to bathroom
• Assists with providing safety of patients requiring restraint staffing
• Adheres to safety regulations by using Universal Precautions, utilizing soft restraints/Posey belts, properly using side rails when appropriate with confused patients, being aware of ID and Allergy bands on patients, handling contaminated linen/trash appropriately.
• Correctly labels collected specimens including time, date, initials of collecting staff, and source to be sent to laboratory.
• Performs EKG's as requested
• Performs point of care testing as requested
• Transports patients to designated areas of hospital as necessary or directed.
• Demonstrates effective time management skills and ability to appropriately prioritize patient care activities.

Education/Experience

• The level of knowledge ordinarily acquired through the completion of high school level course work or equivalent required.
• Knowledge and or experience equivalent to that acquired through unit secretary, medical assistant courses preferred.
• Fundamental knowledge of electronic medical record system
• Current BLS provider
• Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served
• Excellent verbal and written skills
• Completion of hospital approved unit assistants course, acute health care experience preferred
