Job summary

IMTT is seeking an Emergency Response Technician to support Fire Prevention and Protection at the Bayonne terminal. The role involves responding to chemical handling, PPE, and life-safety concerns, including firefighting, spills, rescues, and incident reporting.

The position requires extensive emergency response experience, OSHA HAZWOPER certification, and strong knowledge of safety codes. The role may require on-site training and periodic drills, with potential for overtime.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid Driver’s License and TWIC credential.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in hazmat, fire, and medical emergencies.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER certification (current).
  • Knowledge of NIMS and ICS modeling.

Job description

Job Summary

The Emergency Response Technician supports Fire Prevention and Protection activities at IMTT. The role involves responding to chemical handling, PPE, and general terminal emergency management issues, including firefighting, spills, rescues, and employee life‑safety concerns.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to everyday chemical handling, PPE, and building emergency incidents.
  • Conduct firefighting, spill response, and rescue operations.
  • Perform daily inspections of all fire equipment at the start of each work day.
  • Report all shortcomings to the IMTT Deputy Chief of Operations at the Bayonne terminal.
  • Conduct or attend regular emergency‑response training and drills, both on‑site and off‑site as required.
  • Maintain and oversee response equipment, testing, calibrations, and record‑keeping.
  • Assist in confined‑space entries and provide standing‑by support as needed.
  • Report to the Deputy Chief of Operations or the Chief of Department in their absence.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License and TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
  • Five (5) years’ experience responding to hazmat, fire, and medical emergencies.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER certification (current and maintainable).
  • Knowledge of NIMS and ICs modeling.
  • Ability to meet the minimum Emergency Response Team (ERT) Physical Requirements.
  • Firefighter II and Fire Official NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, ICs 300, 400 certification.
  • Fire Instructor I certification.
  • Valid CPR/First Aid and Haz‑Mat Technician Level III.
  • Good knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, and USCG codes.
  • Record of regulatory, health, and safety training.
  • First Responder or EMR certification.
  • Confined Space Rescue Technician certification.
  • Previous experience in an industrial facility is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication in English.
  • Ability to make decisions in variable environments.
  • Effective communication with all terminal departments.
  • Computer proficiency: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong personal and phone etiquette.
  • Assertive self‑starter capable of operating with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to work in a demanding, team‑oriented, and sometimes stressful environment.
Hours of Work

Typical hours vary; the position is part time. Overtime and occasional weekend work are required as job duties demand. Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice.

Physical and Environmental Demand

Applicants must walk and stand on uneven terrain, climb stairs and ladders, and traverse inclines (uphill, downhill, or mixed). They must be able to ingress and egress in foreseeable emergencies, work safely without posing a direct threat to self or others, and operate in confined spaces, over water, and at heights. The job requires lifting up to 75 pounds, bending, standing, or stooping as necessary. Applicants must wear and use respirator and other safety equipment, work overtime as needed, and may be expected to operate heavy equipment. Equipment used includes company vehicles, fire apparatus, two‑way radios, and emergency response tools.
