Job summary

Astera Health is seeking an EMT for PRN shifts, including 12‑hour day/night and holiday coverage. You’ll deliver BLS patient care on scene and during transport, assess patients, and follow MN DOH rules. Description

Performs activities and functions according to MN State Department of Health rules and regulations. Supports the mission of the hospital while maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy compliance. Accepts patient safety as a key area of focus in job performance.

This position is PRN, scheduled on an as‑needed basis. 12‑hour shifts include day, night, holidays and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates concern for patients of all ages, visitors, and co‑workers.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information and privacy compliance.
  • Provides appropriate level BLS patient care on the scene and during transport to the hospital to address the physical and psychological needs of patients and families.
  • Responds to the incident scene under general direction, sizing up the situation on approach and initiating primary assessment (vital signs, airway, breathing, circulation, bleeding and life‑threatening injuries).
  • Utilizes established protocols to begin pre‑hospital emergency medical care.
  • Conducts secondary assessment of non‑life‑threatening injuries or events.
  • Determines need for BLS procedures and delivers appropriate level of care.
  • Acts as the primary caregiver for the patient.
  • Observes, reports, and documents subjective and objective data for an accurate and timely run report.
  • Assists with Basic Cardiac Life Support or ACLS during cardiopulmonary arrest when indicated and maintains annual CPR training.
  • Responds swiftly and safely to the ambulance garage and incident scenes.
  • Maintains safe control of vehicle and equipment, and ensures scene security for rescue personnel and bystanders.
  • Complies with safety and infection‑control policies when providing emergency medical care, including cot‑side rails, safe medication administration, and body‑substance isolation.
  • Utilizes ambulance checklist routinely, reports problems or concerns to the Ambulance Director promptly, and supports quality of care.
  • Performs routine equipment, supply, and vehicle checks at the start of each shift, and restocks as needed.
  • Provides limited security duties to Astera Health as required within the facility.
  • Follows the EMS code of conduct at all times and applies the AIDET customer‑service system.
  • Participates in required training and at least one staff meeting per quarter.
  • Conducts vehicle maintenance (inside and outside).
  • Restocks supplies and medications in the ambulance.
  • Maintains physical and mental health to satisfy duty requirements.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and verbal/non‑verbal communication skills.
  • Familiar with community resources for qualified patients.
  • Skilled in operating standard medical equipment, electronic medical record software, and office equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication ability.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of commitment to customer‑service excellence.
  • Possesses cross‑cultural sensitivity.
  • Collaborates effectively with internal and external stakeholders, building strong relationships.
  • Works independently or as part of a team as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Physical Requirements

Heavy Duty: Exerting 50–100 pounds of force occasionally or 25–50 pounds frequently, or 10–20 pounds constantly to move objects, including the human body (based on U.S. Department of Labor data). Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Occasionally (up to 33% of work time): Standing, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crouching, smelling, color vision.
Frequently (34–66% of work time): Walking, carrying, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, talking, hearing, near‑acuity vision.

Indirect Oversight

This position oversees Emergency Medical Responders and bystanders on a scene to ensure patient and scene safety.

Education and Experience
  • Minnesota State and National EMSRB Certification as EMT
