Department Summary

The UCLA Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is responsible for leading the university’s efforts to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the impacts of emergencies and disasters affecting the campus community. OEM works collaboratively across departments to develop emergency plans, conduct training and exercises, enhance campus readiness, and ensure compliance with University of California systemwide policies and federal, state, and local regulations. As UCLA continues to grow in complexity—including serving as the designated Athlete Village for the LA28 Olympics and Paralympics—OEM plays a vital role in building a culture of preparedness and resilience across the university.

Position Summary

This position liaises with campus departments to develop and revise emergency operations and response plans, provides support for preparedness training and exercises, responds to emergencies, and ensures readiness of UCLA’s emergency response, Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and recovery systems.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years documented experience in emergency management. (Required)
  • Experience working in a University setting. (Preferred)
  • Experience in tabletop, functional, and full-scale exercise design; FEMA/EMI MEPP certification. (Preferred)
  • Expert knowledge of SEMS and ability to teach concepts. (Required)
  • Background in environmental and occupational health programs. (Required)
  • Ability and willingness to return to campus immediately for major emergencies. (Required)
  • Ability to work effectively in crisis situations with a professional demeanor. (Required)
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet deadlines. (Required)
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and communication skills, including AV proficiency. (Required)
  • Strong writing skills for plans, reports, and correspondence. (Required)
  • Analytical skills for problem-solving and decision-making. (Required)
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe software, and Visio. (Required)
  • Valid California Driver’s License and ability to drive light vehicles. (Required)
  • Experience developing and facilitating EM trainings and exercises. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor’s degree in related area/field or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
  • Valid California Driver’s License (Required)
  • Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) or Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), IAEM. (Preferred)
  • HSEEP certification/experience. (Preferred)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
