Job summary

The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management seeks a regional coordinator in the Response branch to support local jurisdictions during emergencies. You will evaluate situations, determine state response, coordinate with state and volunteer agencies, and assist with jurisdictional recovery and infrastructure restoration.

The role involves field deployments, providing information and technical advice on programs, and ensuring compliance with preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation

Qualifications

The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management protects South Dakotans and their property from the effects of natural, manmade, and technological disasters. To fulfill this charge, we recognize the four phases of emergency management: Preparedness, Response, Recovery, and Mitigation. These four phases have various programs and planning steps associated with them.

As a member of the Response branch, the regional coordinator has the exciting and challenging role of responding to emergency or disaster immediately following the incident. Their role at these incidents is to support and provide guidance to the local jurisdiction, evaluate the situation and determine the proper state response, coordinate response and recovery activities with other state and volunteer agencies, and assist with the jurisdictional recovery from the event to include the restoration of essential infrastructure and government essential functions.

This position has the fulfilling role of providing information and technical advice to local and state officials concerning emergency and disaster programs and planning to ensure compliance with all programs related to preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. The regional coordinator provides guidance to state and local officials with the implementation of emergency and disaster contingency plans and procedures, response and recovery activities, damage assessment, hazardous materials, administrative procedures, and local emergency operations plans This position further acts as a liaison between the Office of Emergency Management and local, tribal, state, and Federal agencies to ensure a functional emergency management program by promoting the Office of Emergency Management, its programs, and its initiatives.

The position also oversees and monitors grant requirements related to the Local Emergency Management Performance Grant which is administered by members of the Response Branch. Monitoring involves basic financial tracking, review, and verification as well as task and activity verification.

The regional coordinator is also responsible for completing special projects as assigned.

This position will work in an office environment and field operations throughout South Dakota. It offers a flexible schedule with the option for some remote work from home. Some after-hours work is required for meetings and emergency response. Must have a valid driver's license. This is a full time position with the Department of Public Safety. The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A Bachelor's degree in a related field or combined experience of at least 5 years is preferred. Ideal candidate is a good communicator, self-starter and a team player, and can work with limited supervision while positively promoting Office programs and initiatives. The position will normally work in the field during emergency response at a local jurisdictions Command Post, Emergency Operations Center, or with the local emergency manager(s) during emergency response. The position may also work in the state Emergency Operations Center during an activation if not deployed to a local jurisdiction.

Knowledge of:

  • functions of an emergency management agency;

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
