Job summary

Sarasota County Government is offering an internship in the Emergency Services department. This program provides hands-on work within Emergency Management, exposure to daily operations, networking, and professional development opportunities.

You will observe and participate in tasks performed by skilled professionals, gain workplace etiquette experience, and build lasting connections with interns and county staff. Competitive wage and mentorship are included.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 18 or 16 with parental consent
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Currently pursuing a diploma or degree in an accredited program
  • Available to commit to internship dates and hours

Responsibilities

  • Assist Emergency Management staff with plans writing and review, inventory, clerical work, moving/reorganizing storage rooms and equipment
  • Assist with proof of compliance documentation for the EMAP
  • Assist with Healthcare CEMP reviews
  • Participate in all exercises and trainings
  • Serve in a support role at the Emergency Operations Center during activations
  • Collaborate with department colleagues to influence real changes
  • Present a report to County Administrator and leadership at internship close
  • Participate in all organized intern events and trainings
  • Gain hands-on work experience and professional development events

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Your internship will include impactful hands‑on work within a department, networking, professional development, and building long lasting connections with other interns, mentors and Sarasota County team members.

Department Responsibilities:
  • Assist Emergency Management staff with plans writing and review, inventory, clerical work, moving/reorganizing storage rooms and equipment
  • Assist with proof of compliance documentation for the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP)
  • Assist with Healthcare Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) reviews
  • Participate in all exercises and trainings
  • Serve in a support role at the Emergency Operations Center during any disaster activations
  • Collaborate with your department colleagues to make and influence real changes.
Internship Program Responsibilities:
  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
  • Participate in all organized intern events and trainings.

About You
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 18 years old, or age 16 with parental consent.
  • High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable).
  • Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
  • Currently seeking a diploma or degree through an accredited secondary or post‑secondary educational program, or within 12 months after graduation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security or closely related field.
About Everything Else

Program Dates:The 2023 internship program will begin onMay 22, 2023 and end on August 11, 2023.

Internship Hours:40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; some departments vary.

Pay Range: $13 per hour (high school student) up to $20 per hour (Grad/Masters student), based on your credit hours earned.
