Job summary

Hartford HealthCare in Manchester, CT is seeking an Emergency Department support professional to work with an interdisciplinary team delivering compassionate care to patients. You will assist with basic patient care under supervision, perform tasks to ensure safety, comfort, and privacy, and support EMS and nursing staff.

Responsibilities include collecting specimens, assisting with admissions/transfers, documenting changes, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; BLS certification or ability to obtain within orientation period.
  • Basic Life Support certification required; De-Escalation techniques certification preferred or obtainable during orientation.
  • At least 1 year of patient care experience as EMT, CMA, or related clinical role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Communicate observed changes in patient status to the RN and notify licensed personnel for pain management.
  • Collect, report, and document patient data and specimens as directed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean environment and ensure patient comfort and privacy.
  • Support treatment procedures and equipment preparation as directed by the nurse or physician.

Position Summary

Works with interdisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Performs activities which assist the patient in meeting basic human needs and activities of daily living, providing basic patient care to patients under the direction of the RN, LPN, Paramedic, mid-level provider, or physician. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment. Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

Qualifications
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must have certification in required Basic Life Support and De-Escalation techniques upon hire or receive certification within new employee introductory orientation period and maintain clinical competency during employment within this role.
Experience
  • At least one (1) recent year experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant/Certified Nurse Assistant or at least one (1) current year patient care experience.
Competencies
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English and have basic personal computer skills.
  • Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, including patient restraint when responding to patient emergency codes.

  • Provides general aspects of patient care that meet physical and/or psychosocial needs. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.
  • Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses. Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
  • Collects, reports, and assists in documentation of data.
  • Performs patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and promotes positive patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain safe and therapeutic environment as evidenced by observation of appropriate interventions. Performs observation of patients as ordered including safety checks and continuous observation, 1:1 observation and documents appropriately.
  • Effectively uses psychological and physical management techniques to manage violent or potentially violent situations consistent with CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers, and other members of the health care team.
  • Maintains a good rapport/ relationship and a cooperative working relationship with outside agencies i.e., public safety officials-police, fire, and EMS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, to promote efficient functioning of the unit. Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures. Assists with preparation of equipment and procedures. Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed.
  • Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to patient requests, including prompt acknowledgement of patient call bell. Maintains patient comfort and privacy.
  • Maintains an awareness of activity in all areas of the department, offering assistance to others whose workload may be heavier. Makes good use of downtime.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist providers with treatments/special procedures and the ability to use related equipment.
  • Collects, correctly labels, and sends specimens to the Lab as ordered.
  • Facilitates patient preparation for evaluation – undressing, placing on noninvasive blood pressure monitor, ECG monitor, and pulse oximetry.
  • Performs duties as oriented, including EKG’s, phlebotomy, point of care testing, crutch walking, dressing changes, air casts, ace wraps, and splinting.
  • Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated by and supervised by the registered nurse, mid-level provider, or physician.
